My son who is 24 was made redundant in March from a job he had worked in for 2 years. (He is also a graduate) He has applied for lots of jobs. This week he has had 2 job offers ! One working full time for a bank and another from an electrical retailer (the one that sells trendy things beginning with "i" ) There are jobs out there, you just have to make sure that you sell yourself and do your research before you go to any interviews.0

I think what I was trying to get across that when I was looking for work I couldn't find anything in my area in the supermarkets, I am flexible and mature and educated but even if I had wanted shelf stacking as a career there were/are no vacancies. I have just been on the Tesco web site and the nearest store job to here is 40 miles away! Tonight I have looked for general assistant roles at Sainsburys nothing and Asda, No Results Found.
My friends daughter is looking not only for summer but on going next year when she goes back to college as it's not a full time course (sorry I forgot to put that bit earlier) so she won't just flit off in September, she is looking longer term than that and if she can't find a job in her chosen career which is the police (and as we all know that is looking very iffy at the moment as a career choice) then she may well stay at the supermarket/DIY store/warehouse etc, but there are no vacancies!!
I was trying to say how angry I get when 'stacking shelves' or 'work in a supermarket' is constantly banded about it's not that easy, it may have been a few years ago, or a stop gap job, or something simple to do but not these days!0 -

When people say shelf stacking I don't think it is meant literally. I think people mean apply for ANY and EVERY job.
Down here near me there are jobs galore if people just open their eyes and stop saying "well I'm not going to do that job" usually meaning cleaning, fruit/veg picking, factory work, basic admin work, care home work etc.0 -
I started my new job on Saturday, so there are some jobs out there. I'm a new graduate too.
But I think McD's know hiring graduates who use them as stepping stones are all part of the game. There was another graduate who started the same day as me, and there is a qualified nurse flipping burgers for a living there already.0 -

I've applied for, and I kid you not, ~275 jobs over the last 3 weeks. Of that, I've heard back from 6, and one of those was a job in Canada that I applied for because I have ALWAYS wanted to emmigrate there at some point. I was planning at retirement age (ie in about 40 years) but if I could have landed the job... :}
Rather goes against the idea that there are no jobs though, doesn't it?0 -

There's no dispute there are jobs but there aren't enough jobs, not by a very long way which makes competition fierce. You might very well be the best candidate but there's a good chance your application barely gets a glance in amongst all the others.0
