Why do you say it wouldn't start until September? Most, if not all jobs I've applied for have started a week or so later.
because the OP is looking for work in schools?

OP, there may be holiday childcare jobs available, eg working in holiday clubs etc.

I have recently been offered a job in a school which starts in September. As I am on jobseekers allowance I have been told I need to apply for other 'better' jobs until I start in September!
As I have already agreed to the offer, I don't see what difference it would make if I was offered another position, say next week, because that too would not start until September.
This is bureaucracy at its ultimate best

From the point of view of the zombies at the DWP, as you are on JSA, you have to be out looking for work, even if you have accepted an offer of work in September.

Keep applying for work, but on your CV and/or application form give a religion (e.g. Roman Catholic) as your nationality, and under hobbies and interests write: "1. Sex. 2. Alcohol-related activities." End of problem.

Its a silly state of affairs I wouldn't have told them however as the will start to hype up your mandatory meetings to make it look like there intervention helped you into work justifying your advisors job. Anyone else in the same boat just foot tell them to avoid an intensity of meetings with them. Well done by the way.

Congratulations on getting a job. I'm still looking/trying and applying for jobs everyday for 2 months, as I've been made redundant after 17 years thanks to the ****y Tory Government.
The Jobcentre will expect you to look for work up until September as thats what your signing on for, as I'm sure you already know. I suggest working as a care assistant so you can pick your hours to suit children at school etc. Otherwise theres not much out there.... Hope that helps.
the tory gov made you redundant? I think not!!

If you are not happy sign of JSA then and not take the money until you start earning it surely?

Or as said look for any job before then, even if it is temporary.

People in our society do not view this benefit in this way. Over 90% of Jsa claimants do not know what their job seekers agreement is. Its is generally claimed for money purposes and like any other agreement if your not fullfilling it then you should come off it or state that you are still actively job seeking they would be within their rights to hype up your appointment and ask for proof of your applications else where also it won't hurt to keep applying as you may fine someting better.

As before I would advise people to keep their mouths shut and just tell them the day you start. Its easy to want to rub there face in it when they talk trash I know been there done that.

I agree with your last statement which I'm sure the OP has realised.

She can still be looking for some kind of temporary work. I've also only been looking for work within schools or in child care and as the schools break up next week it's going to be very quiet for me job hunting until September

  • Well done on getting your job.

The problem is that no job is definate until you actually start. I know it sounds silly but take this opportunity to apply for other better jobs. You never know your luck. It's always easier to get a job if you already have one!

I never tell advisor if I've got a job starting in 3-4 weeks or more, I usually tell them on my last sign on day! My work is constantly temp contracts, so I still look for temp ones anyway, sometimes it can just be a day, well that's how they start...

Benefits are annoying, but it's sometimes necessary to fill in all that paperwork (especially if you're working part time, or have 1 days temp work!). I'm starting to see it as if I'm earning the benefit the amount of forms for JSA and Housing Benefit there are. I can sort of see where some people come from by not getting part time work or temporary work, they don't want to deal with the paperwork! Then again that's not everyone.

Good luck at your new job OP! Just keep signing on as normal, filling in the book and enjoy the summer.
