Got a job but Job Centre insist I get a different one!

  • I'd recommend the 'business as usual' approach. Simply continue showing the JobCentre that you are actively seeking work right up until your new job starts.

I'm starting my own business in September as part of the 'New Business Venture' initiative that the government launched last month. Despite this, I still have to show that I'm actively seeking work (well my JobSeekers Advisor thinks thats what I've got to do - they don't seem to have any details on the run-up while I'm doing the Business Plan with my appointed mentor!!!)

The jobcentre will expect you to look for temporary work in the meantime. They said this to my husband when he had a start date of just over a month away a couple of years ago. However since you are looking for teaching work its likely that anything you could apply for wouldn't come up at the moment.

I would keep applying for temporary roles in the meantime. You can be perfectly honest with any interview you go on that you are looking for something purely to cover between now and September and you may find they won't be happy to offer you things - especially if its areas you haven't worked before.

you could just do this OP, write down you looked on 2 websites and local jobs paper for work since it is what you have to do to get your jsa

That would work fine until someone at the jc puts the op's ase in doubt eg they don't believe they are trying. They will pull up all the vacancies from a set period of time that match the OP's jsag and if they haven't applied they may be sanctioned.

I doubt they'll bother. If her advisor knows she'll be signing off in just over 6 weeks anyway its hardly worth going down that road, especially if she's still in the early stages of JSA where you're allowed to apply just in your usual field anyway.

When I was offered my job I had to wait for CRB and occy health checks which took about 8 weeks. My advisor pretty much told me to just go through the motions to make sure I stayed eligible for that time but they weren't actually pushing me to get a temp job.

I disagree...one of my friends got a job and was given a start date in 2 weeks time. Her advisor told her that she hadnt done enough to qualify for JSA and that she would be sanctioned.

As I have already agreed to the offer, I don't see what difference it would make if I was offered another position, say next week, because that too would not start until September.
This is bureaucracy at its ultimate best

Why do you say it wouldn't start until September? Most, if not all jobs I've applied for have started a week or so later.

Any ideas what temporary jobs would be enough to pay child care and my mortgage?

Plenty of work on farms as its harvest. However it does mean physical activity.

this could be seen as purposely harming your chances of getting the job and result in a sanction. thats only if they find out of course.
