Hi all, am starting baby led weaning on my nearly 6mth old breast fed boy! Just introducing playing with food at the mo-so just given broccoli, cauliflower, carrots etc. When he is past 6mths will want to introduce other things including toast with hummus etc Has anyone any other suggestions-and want to make my own hummus -which I have tried in the past and it is never as nice as shop bought stuff. Any recipes for nice hummus would be v. helpful-as I will obviously be eating it too!!0

There are a few recipes on https://www.babyledweaning.co.uk
I am also taking this approach and i can't believe how simple it is! i remember with my other two faffing about boiling up weird combinations of food to within an inch of its life, then pummelling and mashing everything, adding milk to try and get it super smooth, what a faff!
I have never tried making my own hummus but i will admit to letting my LO have a little bit of the shop bought stuff and she loves it. She likes most strong flavours too, probably what she gets via my milk! Top of the list of favourites has to be strawberries and blueberries- i split the skin of these a little first.0 -
I gave up trying to make my own humous - Ds won't eat it, so we buy him the shop bought stuff.
I am grateful we went down the BLW route, but be aware that not every baby goes from eating nothing to 3 meals a day within weeks - I felt like I was doing something wrong as other mums doing BLW were having no problems. The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
I find making houmous the biggest PITA ever. I watched something with Gordon Ramsey and he said he couldn't understand why people buy something that is so quick to make. Well Gordon that's because shop bought is cheap, convenient, and in places like M&S and Sainsburys you can get super convenient mini pots so you don't have to sling loads out after 3 days!
My DS loves the stuff, preferably on pitta bread, or cucumber sticks.
You might want to avoid it for a while if you've any nut allergies in the family though.0 -
yes I agree it is PITA to make hoummus (however you spell it!), was trying to be money saving about it, but maybe time saving is better-and tastier sometimes too! Thanks for everyones advice!0

Mini pots don't touch the sides in this house - a full tub will be gone in 3 days if DS isn't at nursery. I've tried having it on things like breadsticks and cucumber - he just grabs the pot and spoon now...:oThe IVF worked;DS born 2006.0 -
Has anyone had any experience of this? I have been reading the UK forum with interest and looking forward to the book coming out.
DS will be 6 months in November and I am looking forward to him having his first taste of brocoli and sweet potato.
As always money saving advice will be helpful as well.0 -
I used to know someone who did this with her baby and a spoon of mush never crossed her lips, it was fantastic! I will def do it with No2.... Yep I did this with DD2 and never looked back! Sod all that pureeing and whatnot!
DD2 made a right mess but was soooo much easier and stress-free! Florets of broccoli and cauliflower, sticks/ slices of carrot, hilarious incidents of mashed potato (LOL), banana slices that took ages to pick up because they slide out of LO's fingers:D
Would deffo recommend it!Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

I do a mix. Started on purees but I had a baby who HAD to feed herself. A 6 month old with a spoon is a disaster, so I moved on to just giving her proper food. At about 8 months she started taking big bites and gagging on her food more than eating it and I switched completely to purees for a few weeks. At the moment I do both purees and "whole" foods.
My little girl will eat pretty much anything, and attempt any texture (although she isn't always successful!), and I believe that is down to the baby led weaning. So I heartily recommend it!
But I must admit one of the more commonly uttered phrases in my house is "she will sort herself out" - when she gets a mouthful of food and is trying to figure out what to do with it she will sometimes gag, and generally the food will be expelled out of the mouth (and shoved back in again, lol!). You just have to not panic and not interfere and just sit calmly letting her sort it out, even though it can look and sound scary at times!0
