Licence Revoked - a few questions

Hi folks,
I was recently caught speeding and recieved 3 points and a £60 fine, which I have paid. (35mph in a 30mph zone). I was asked to send my licence back to the DVLA which I duly did in one of their pre-paid envelopes.
Today on returning home from work, I recieved a letter from the DVLA stating that "As we have not recieved your licence within 28 days, your entitlement to drive has been cancelled and your licence revoked".
I can only assume that either the licence got lost in the post somewhere, or is awaiting processing in the DVLA offices somewhere! I'm kicking myself now for not sending it recorded.
I've tried ringing the DVLA, but they are shut until tomorrow and don't open until 9am. I've got to be in work tomorrow by 8am over 30 miles away, needless to say my employers will take a dim view if i ring them up and tell them I can't turn up due to the above.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Having done some digging on Google, it appears that prior to November 2010 a 12 month "grace" period applied, however this doesn't seem to the case anymore and I have also read horror stories about having to pass a test again!
THanks in advance for any information that anyone has.

Over what period of time are we talking?
You licence is not revoked for 12 months, your DVLA status will be an expired subtantive licence if we are only talking 28 days since conviction. Technically you could still drive if this is the case but you do face your car being taken from you if stopped and they don't read your full driving record. You now need to reapply for your driving licence reporting the old one lost, a new licence will be sent out with the 3 points.0 -
I don't know about the legalities of it but unless you have to drive as part of your job I'd sort out a lift or taxi to work.I wouldn't risk driving now.0

I was given fine/points in May 2011. I sent off my licence soon after, i'd guess around the beginning of june.
I don't drive as part of my job but I do work quite some distance away, with no available lift. A taxi there would cost £50.
I have tried the DVLA tonight but no matter what options I select, i get automated messages.0 -
They will tell you to reapply for a licence, do it tomorrow.
Your licence will not be revoked untill 2012 if you have only been convicted the once. Or are you a new driver (Less than 2 years) and this is the second set of 3 points?0 -
Been driving 10 years, had 3 points about 7 years ago but they should have come off by now. This recent 3 points is my only conviction/offence since.
I suppose what I'm worried about is not being able to drive until the matter is sorted. I can't afford to not be able to drive, especially since the DVLA are known for taking ages to get things done.0 -
I know of one who applied on a monday and was granted a licence by wednesday.0

This is one reason why anything that I send to the DVLA goes recorded...Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0
