I have one of these fridge freezers but my serial starts 07 even though model number is on the list.

Not long after I had it I had a problem with the freezer, the timer on the frost free thingy had broken and the freezer was over heating. It was replaced but has been ok since.... do you think I'm ok then or should I call anyway as I have already had the problem?

Finally managed to get through. I used a different number to the freephoen one given to me by Comet - 01923 818121. Still very busy and got the engaged tone a lot, but that was better than the irritating message on the freephone number. They confimred my model needs the modification and took my details to pass on to british gas, who are doing the repairs for them. They told me BG will be in touch within 24 hours to arrange an appointment. fingers crossed. They confimred it was ok to leave the fridge on in the meanwhile. I asked Comet the same question when I got through to them earlier and the chap was really helpful and said that his understanding was you shodul only be really worried if you have a problem with water leaking out from under the fridge, as that means the defroster is not working properly and that's when water can get into the electrical and short them.

I have one manufactured in 2000 and purchased the following year, have to say it's been the best long lasting product in my kitchen. If they modify it will it continue to be? but these fire stories are horrendous and I'm tempted just to switch it off( weeks food in it) and buy a new different brand at a reasonable price. Kitchen above our bedroom and our wee kitten sleep's their overnight.

  • We owned a Beko Frost Free F/F which caused us to lose our home to a house fire back in 2005. I have been rooting around in my paperwork to try to establish if it is one of these models, however it would suggest that fires caused by these models date back further than the 2007 that has been suggested in recent news reports!

I've been warnig friends and family about that particular brand ever since our fire, and I am so glad I did after seeing the devastation that has been caused by these F/F's! Dread to think how bad the outcome could have been......

    The models reported are 2000 - 2006 not 2007.
  • Bear with me on this one.... it may be relevent to this thread.
Me & the dear wife went looking for a new cooker on Sunday afternoon as the oven on "old faithful", (had it 8+ years) had stopped working, so went to Comet and saw nothing that we liked then went onto Currys. Found a cooker we both liked at a good price so payed by debit card (£299 & £50 for delivery, connection & recycle "old faithfull"). Got next day delivery & install (Monday between 3.15pm + 7.15pm), they came just before 5pm and were in the house for about 10-15 mins, installed new cooker, said to the wife to let it "burn-in" before cooking any thing in the oven. 10 mins after they left the cooker went bang and tripped the fuse, wife reset the switch in the fuse box and it tripped again but not straight away, so the dear wife got on the phone to Currys and said the cooker has been in for less that half an hour, it has tripped twice, I dont want it I want a refund!, (the callcentre rep then told her that she had to phone the maker of the cooker to arrange a pick up for the faulty cooker -WRONG! WRONG! WRONG !).
I arrive home from work just after 6.00pm and after my dear wife explaining to me the story I try the cooker 1 more time. BIG FLASH from behind the cooker, BIG BANG and the fuse tripped again, so we went straight to Currys, spoke with the manager and said we have only had the cooker just over 1 hour it has gone BANG 3 time after your engineer installed it, it isn't fit for purpose we want a refund thank you wery much !.
Much praise must go to the manager (Chris) who sortred out the refund & a mega quick pick up of the faulty cooker, (the earliest pickup was Friday, but after a phone call got it changed to Wednesday). So we should have the money refunded by Friday at the latest. We have decided to go to a local independent supplier.
I think you can guess the make of the cooker- yep you got it in 1, it's a BEKO.
No smoke without fire, pardon the pun........

The models reported are those which were MANUFACTURED between 2000 and 2006, which is indeed when we purchased it (from Curry's in 2002). Our fire was in July 2005!

The relevance of 2007 is that the news reports are suggesting there has been a spate of fires since 2007/2008 which relate to these faulty fridge-freezers. My post was merely pointing out that our fire ocurred before this, and was - according to the fire investigation which was carried out - due to the same fault that these other fires in London have been caused by. The fire team that were at our bungalow were astounded at tha damage and said it was the first fire they had ever been called to which had been caused by a F/F! It's a shame Beko did not recall the F/F's back in 2005!

    I'll cross-post something from my G+ here:

Yes, the first known instance happened in 2007, and around 30 similar have happened in the next few years. But there are half a million appliances. This represents 0.06% of all the fridges sold. With so few affected appliances (and how likely are Beko to be able to get their hands on them from testing?), it would be difficult to determine whether there was an issue with the whole lot, one particular batch, or just bad luck on the ones that did catch fire. If you are a large company like Beko, you would want to make very sure there was an issue affecting so many people before you spend out so much money, and also worry so many people about their items. You wouldn't recall every fridge after the first instance, simply because there may not be a problem.
