thought that was the case only if you didn't have any of the V5, the OP has the green slip which is part of the V5 as given when you buy a car so the DVLA are unlikely to contact the previous owner.

i still dont think you would be allowed to fill in a new v5c and get road tax in the local dvla though until due process has been done but im willing to be corrected
astgate gives the impression you can

I have no idea as I have never been to a DVLA office but as you have the green slip I can't see any reason to try and contact the previous owner so the process could be completed very quickly, whether or not they can do that over the counter is another thing. IF they can then there is no reason why you can't buy road tax straight away if the rest of the paperwork is in order, again whether you can get that from a DVLA office or not I have no idea.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

The green slip is what the seller gives you, the rest of the log book is what the sellers sends to the DVLA which includes full details of the buyer. As the DVLA have not processed this I would expect them to contact the registered keeper to confirm (a) they have sold the car and (b) who they sold it to.

The other strange thing is that the seller has not contacted the DVLA as within 4 weeks of sending off the log book they should have received a letter confiming they are no longer responsible for the car, without this they will continue to receive any speeding tickets etc.

Based on the above I would expect it to take several weeks for you to receive a new log book and I dont think this can be sorted out by a visit to the local DVLA office so it looks like no driving for a while.

I had similar, had teh green slip. taxed and forgot about it. I ended up taking teh green slip, insurance and MOT to the DVLA office and they taxed while I was there and a new V5 turned up about a week later.

I believe astgate is not suggesting OP can tax it using this method just that going to the DVLA office will be the quickest way of getting the new V5 and thus the quickest way of getting it taxed.

The immediate tax disc would be bonus if the DVLA office staff were allowed to issue one. Would need to take MOT and insurance with you.

you people seem to forget that it was told that the part 10 of the v5c has already been stamped by the post office and therefore this car is now assumed to be out of the trade and in ownership
it also follows that if the buyer didnt contact swansea last year 6 weeks after transfer then he is committing an offence
its also quite possible that 6 police forces are looking for him for unpaiid road fines

Richard may be saying he used the green slip to tax it initially, then forgot about it, then when he needed to tax for the second time he went with green slip and got it sorted. The determining factor in whether Richard's post is relevant or not is whether he bought the car with tax, and whether he used the green slip once or twice.

Right, a little bit of lateral thinking....
    1. Hire a car.
    2. Go by train.
    3. Fly.
    4. Coach, National Express, Megabus, or other.

and they allowed you to tax the car at the same time?
If I wished, done that before as well, in this case tho the car had just been taxed. Although this is NI so maybe slightly different over here.

just edit this, I actually went in with the complete old V5 as the seller couldnt be bothered sending it off, they just tore off the green slip, threw the rest back at me and that was it :)

yes, I was able to change ownership details there and then, and if I had the correct apperwork, insurance/mot I could then tax it, the V5 wouldnt come through for a week or so tho, done it several times now:)
