Can you advise about the changes to Natwest/RBS accounts please?

Hello everyone, asking this question on behalf of my mother who banks with Natwest. She was in branch today to deposit some money and she was told that the bank has made changes to their accounts? she said she was told they no longer offer the Step Account and that she should think about having a visit with someone from the branch to "discuss" her options. What's going to happen to people who have the Step Account or the RBS equivalent? my mum is very worried in case she loses access to her account because it's the only one she has but I don't think it will come to that, surely? she was told there are new terms and conditions that apply from today with the bank but that's not something mum likes to deal with. Will people with the Step Account or RBS equivalent be forced to move over to the new "Basic" account? can someone maybe provide me with a little information so I can pass it onto her please?

Thank you very much for your help :) xxx

The new Natwest terms and conditions can be found here:

Having a quick look there is not any mention of existing step accounts being changed over to the basic bank account.

I was told on the phone today that key accounts can no longer have direct debits paid from them, it would appear that many staff are more confused than the customers!

Its a total farce to be honest. I asked a question today in Natwest and the advisor looked at me like I had two heads

The only thing good out of it is new design bank cards lol

Bascially any existing key and step accounts will remain the same as they do now there will be no changes.

Is the new card design the one for the basic account? Just looked on the new t&cs for that and the card looked different?

Its looks as if the card is different so im presuming there is a new card design. Plus the group is going to have to remove service 100 and 250 from there cards now the cheque guarantee scheme as ended. Im about to order a new card so Ill let you know if the design has changed when I get it :D The change might just be for basic account customers ill let you know. In all honesty I refer the design detailed in the picture.

The information given to the branches has been poor to be fair.

Hmm, we were told today (I work in a NW branch) that all step customers will be changing over to basic accounts (and therefore lose access to non-RBS ATMs) in the next 2 weeks.

From what we were told, it's not the same date for everyone but people will get letter when they are going to change.

I wish they would make it clear as we're quite confused!

Yep, I have to agree. We're just not 100% on anything that's going on with the new accounts!!
