Im not sure if this is the right place to post this, but would appreciate any advice. My friend got married about 15 years ago and still keeps a bank account in her maiden name and has the statements go her parents. She saves in this account and uses it often for purchases and even items on HP. I have told her that I think it is illegal to do this as it could be classed as money laundering. She disagrees and thinks its perfectly legal! Does anyone know who is right.?????????
Many thanks
Suki

not sure about bank accounts but i have a passport in my maiden name and i have travelled on it since i have been married, never had any problems. it is not a legal requirement to change your name when you get married.

You can use any name you wish as long as it is not done for fraud or to deceive.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I'm married and have accounts in both names and my passport is in my maiden name.
  • That is interesting - if your friend were applying for credit card - would she disclose whether she was married?

What I mean is does she have two identities like some financial details in married name and some as single person in maiden name?

I recently got married but have not changed anything into my wedded name yet... (dont fancy finding a new signature) current name is shorter

  • The bank I work for has a section which asks if you have been using any other name such as a maiden name or stage name etc.
Provided you do not lie on the application I see no problem with this.

You can use either maiden or married name, but not both. Using both then creates two profiles with banks and credit reference agencies, which means you could be offered twice as much credit as you should be entitled to. Whether or not it's your intention, it is fraudulent to do this.
  • I still don't see how "money laundering" comes into it.

I would think using either name would be fine, but to use both (and for 15 years) is where it seems dodgy to me especially as there are 2 addresses involved.. Tax could be an issue as well, as it could look like a tax dodge.

What if she were to die, who would get any money in the maiden name account ? Does her husband even know about these other accounts ?
