Belkin have a poor reputation for routers, other products OK. I personally use and prefer Netgear. Suggestion not recommendation, but I have an earlier Netgear router on my VM cable BB and it works fine.

Existing cable modem --> wired ethernet --> access point ethernet port --> access point --> wired ethernet --> PC.

Access point --> wifi connection --> Blackberry.

Won't have a DHCP server built in or routing facilities. And as the cable modem will only support one IP address at a time can't see how it would work.

Yep, you're right. I checked the access points I have (US Robotics) and they have DHCP/NAT/routing/switch capability built in as well.

However since OP a;ready has cable modem then this should do it for 17 quid:
