They don't charge if you submit a previously unknown camera site.

I should know, because my 'free subscription' has about 99 years left on it.

And because there are now so many cameras about, the database is updated fortnightly instead of monthly.

It isn't that easy I'm afraid, because you also need to make sure that you download the appropriate version for your particular type of Sat Nav.

  • The database is also copyright. Its really worth the money if you have SAT NAV. And yes the downloads are identifiable to a particular user. I know of two methods they use

    From thier website:

    © Copyright Protection
PocketGPSWorld.com Speed Camera Warning Database (for the whole or a part of), all rights reserved Worldwide. A number of fluid, changeable methods are in place where we can easily identify copied versions of the Speed Camera Warning Database. All individual downloads and batches of the Speed Camera Warning Database can be identified both to a particular download and member. For commercial reasons we do not disclose details of this protection methodology nor do we give all (some will be obvious to the more technical) system or visual clues that protection is active. Attempts at corruption of the protection system and consequent dissemination of the data will result in prosecution.

The database and data contained within it are owned by and copyright of PocketGPSWorld.com. This data is not allowed to be shared, reproduced on any website or in any application in part or in full without our prior written authorisation from PocketGPSWorld.com. Data, text, graphics, indicia and code are protected by UK, US, EU and International Copyright Laws, and may not be copied, reprinted, published, translated, hosted, or otherwise distributed by any means without explicit permission.

All Speed Camera Warning Database (including red light cameras) subscriber and non-subscriber submissions, additions and amendments automatically become the individual and collective property of PocketGPSWorld.com. No permission will be granted to companies, organisations, websites or author's who distribute our data without a current commercial PocketGPSWorld.com license.
  • It can be done, I bought the database myself and then emailed the zip file to a friend who then put it on her sat nav, but for 2 quid its well worth the money though.
  • I'm not saying it can't be done. Its trivial, just copy and paste the files. What I'm saying is if you give a copy to someone and then they share it on p2p etc. then the files can be sourced back to your original download. For what they do and the money charged, personally I wouldn't share the files. as an extreme if pocketgps disapeared theres no other camera database thats anywhere near as complete as thiers. So for £2 a month or £19 a year to me they are worth supporting.
  • I found it rather in bad taste to encourage everyone to contribute to the common benefit - then ringfence it - and start charging for profit ; oddly enough as soon as Sat Nav's became a commodity to the greater populus.

do you have to pay 2 quid every month or can you just pay £2 every 3- 4 months or when ever you feel like updating it .Is it just a file you copy onto your tomtom and then it just stays there until you feel like updating it or does it some how expire after a month ??
