The thing is Gypsy the Police simply make a check on the MID part of their standard things to do when dealing with any kind of vehicle related incident.

The Met in East London boroughs turned the ANPR off due to the number of hits, but it is easy for a PC out on the streets to check Insurance, they give the details in when they do the PNC check.

Have seen the Met catch uninsured drivers several times at the scene of minor RTC's that neither the POliceor Ambos should have been called to.

Once the informant was the uninsured driver, what a tool.............

Back in around 1984 (may have been before introduction of points system) I had a car on the road with lapsed (by a few days) insurance, parked up and not being driven as I was waiting till pay day to get the engine fixed. Two policemen turned up at the door one day and asked if the car was insured. I said no, and eventually ended up getting a fine from the magistrates. The day after I had the police visit, I went to my broker to reinsure the car, told him what had happened and he said "you fool, you should have got a producer off them and come here straight away, I'd have backdated the cover note for you!"

If the car was not being driven, what were you charged with and convicted of?

in the 80's you could buy a cover note off a man in the pub for a tenner, i dont know how people got away producing them they had names like 'carecar insurance' and 'abdul insurance' but they were accepted by the police.

In the eighties I could get a legitmate cover note from a broker for a tenner.

The matter has been passed on to the bus companies insurance company. The bus co loss and insurance manager is an ex police officer and he has spent all day yesterday dealing with it, if I find out more I'll keep you all posted.

    Keep us posted about what?

Credit Hire companies won't be falling over themselves to provide a car where a bus company are the other party. They really really don't like paying out and will use every trick in the book to stall payments.

He may find someone willing to provide a credit hire but they won't all be willing to

They'll just be the even dodgier ones that charge more, to cover the longer payment times, and to cover the percentage of payments they don't get back.

Hopefully it will be one of the dodgier ones who tend to be newer to the game and naive as they could end up getting their fingers burnt with a bus company.
