OP doesn't mention whether he/she had a good reason to be in the outside (overtaking) lane - there are only 2 good ones, overtaking, or turning right. If you're not doing one of these things, you should be on the inside lane.
Good point above is just because you think you're doing 70, doesn't mean you are. Speedos are legal overreading by up to 10% (but not underreading at all), so if your legal speedo says 70, you could ACTUALLY be doing anything between 63 and 70mph, but not 71.
What speed you are doing is no other driver's business, and what speed other drivers do is none of yours. If everyone drives in the correct lane, these problems would be much rarer.0 -
Is it because you are not actually overtaking anyone? I actually find that more people just sit in the outside lane because they can just about see someone to overtake in the distance. Just pull over, let them past and move out again when you need to.House saving Targets:

it's quite possible that due to inaccuracy on many cars your speedo reads 70mph when you are in fact travelling at just over 60mph. if the other motorists are in a hurry and want to waste fuel then let em:money:
This.
Speedo can legally overread by something stupid like 10%+6 so you could be doing 58 and a bit MPH when your speedo reads 70.
If you have a satnav, or a phone with a satnap function, fine a nice long straight flat road and do a constant 70, then compare your satnav reading.
I know in my Mondeo I accelerate to an indicated 82mph (actually 70mph) and then stick the cruise control on.
The rest probably are just idiots though. Let them past and then when they have a crash it wont be into you.0 -
I seem to attract people who overtake then immediately slow down. WHY?
I then end up overtaking them because they are now going slower than I was when originally overtaken.
Usually it is because you are driving erratically, i.e. speeding up and slowing down for no discernible reason. braking down to 20 mph ish for corners where there is no need to break etc.
Its almost certainly a reflection on your driving style0 -

Never a truer word was said.....
Half these problems don't become problems until somebody decides they gonna go vigilante on someone they perceive to be driving too quickly.
And by vigilante i mean the "im doing the speed limit and im not moving over" atittude......
But as I say, most people don't even know what the NSL sign (officially some 60% of drivers) actually means. So when they start !!!!ing about trying to slow down other drivers, they end up generating an angry monster from someone who was just trying to make normal good progress.

To be fair the OP did actually state "70mph" and "duel[sic] carriageway" so in this case I think we can assume they do know what that sign means.
I agree with you in principle though. Just yesterday I followed a guy out of a 30 zone onto an NSL that starts with the above sign, so he carried on at 30, when the limit dropped to 50 he accelerated to 50mph and then continued doing 50 once it went back to NSL.
At this point I overtook, and got two fingers while I was alongside and full beams in my rear view mirror until he was out of sight.
I guess I should be glad they didn't try to speed up to prevent me from pulling in safely.0 -
Try being a white van man for a day and you'll see some complete p r i c k s on the road just because you are in a van they HAVE to get in front of you.
My van can easily keep up with the traffic flow but because you are in a van the prat in the Merc or beemer has to get in front even if it means undertaking then cutting back in.You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -
The worst culprits are the ones who come from the slowest left lane to over take you in the middle lane using the fast lane and only to go back to the slow lane to exit at the nearest exit - What a waste of fuel and definitely a MUGI owe £3233 @ 0%0

A speedo can legally over read not under read.
If as in the example above the speedo stated 70 and you were really travelling at 58, then the speedo is over reading.0 -
This morning on the way into work I had some muppet in the outside lane of a dual carriageway doing 35 in a 40 limit with a clear inside lane. Not a flipping clue what thay were doing but probably still thinking that everyone else wanted to go too fast.
Regularly get the cliche lot who do one speed everywhere too. Road back from work is 50 apart from a village which is of course 30. Its only small but it is there. Not unusual to follow someone doing 40 all the way along the road and they look uppity when you catch them back up again and pass them (long straight after the village).
Hint there plums - doing 10mph under the limit on a safe road does not entitle you to do 10mph over when there might be kids about.
Grrr.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0
