vic has nothing to do with mileage its a check to confirm an insurance write off is not a ringer
as for mot man making a mistake yes it most certainly can kill a sale just like a loopy advisory can
so why buy a car with a problem
because as you rightly say it will give others someting to haggle on

what i think atrixblue.-MFR-. has failed to grasp is this car is an 010 plate car rather than say a 53 plater :)

Just get the DVLa to investigate it and amend the details. It will take a week at the most.

It's always down to a clerical error.

Common sense tells you the mileage is correct. Once the discrepency is sorted everything will be fine.

KwikFit are just as bad at slapping any mileage down. The mdetails get logged at HPi too.

Thanks both - I'll ring the dealer first thing and say we're not happy, need it amended, etc. If it's amended so that the mistake doesn't then show up at all then we'll take the car. If it remains but then has a corrective note we'll likely reconsider as obviously being a 1 year old car it ain't cheap! Hope harveybobbles is right with the reassuring comments as we like the car.

We did say the deposit payment was subject to HPI check although the HPI was technically clean as there's no finance/insurance issues etc. So if we do want to back out I'm hopeful we can get the deposit back, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

    Arrrgghhh.

Dealer has spoken to the DVLA who basically said "tough". They said that they don't guarantee their mileage records are accurate. When we send in our V5 (if we buy the car) the mileage we supply will go on as a fresh entry. But, in short, they won't do anything about their error.

We're not the first people to encounter this:
    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=81363

Dealer is now calling HPI because he understands that we're not happy with this on the car's record to see if HPI can do anything their end about removing the entry for future HPI reports. But I'm not really happy with this I don't think. Do all checks that future buyers can run use the HPI database or are there other sources?

    Dealer isn't happy either.

I don't know what to do. Car is one year old, in superb condition, done 11k miles and had it's first service at 9,800 miles / 10 months old. Everything absolutely checks out apart from this, but I know it's going to bite us on the ar&e in the future.

The dealer can ask HPi to investigate it, its what we subscribe to HPi for.

They will contact the first owner and ask for dates and mileages of sale and who it was sold to - be it a private person or a garage. Hpi will then contact the next keeper etc etc...

It takes a week or so.

Well, fortunately there's only been one owner so that might help the process along...

I'll see what the dealer says after he's spoken to HPI...

Spending this much money shouldn't be so traumatic. :)

aren't there any receipts with it that have mileage on when the work was done? if it's done 112k then it should have a fair few receipts...
Although i can't see many people doing over 300 miles every day for a year

We have no doubt in our minds that the car has genuinely only done 11,000 miles. It was first registered in April 2010 and had a main dealer service in February at 9,886 miles. It then has a National Mileage Register record of 11,000 miles on 14th April and the DVLA record of 112,000 miles on 21st April. Based on the condition of the car, engine, brakes etc, it can't have done 100k and then been clocked. Unless they replaced everything afterwards. :)

The issue for me is the erroneous entry on it's history.

Firstly, if we write it off and have to agree an insurance valuation, won't the insurance look into its history and find this and use it to down-value it?

Secondly, it's under Ford's warranty for another two years or up to 60,000 miles. Couldn't Ford use the history to claim it's no longer under warranty?

Thirdly, and much more likely to be a problem, if we sell it in say five years with 80,000 miles on the clock when it's not in such good condition, won't the mileage discrepancy put people off?

i doubt it to be honest as it's not an official recording if i remember correctly; it's just an entry on the V5 when it's sent back. Especially as you have a 9800 mile service, then an 11k NMR record and a 100k change in the space of a week and then everything else after that goes back to how it should be.

as ive said before if the discrepancy isnt sorted dont buy it
    you already know this
as for hpi clearing this well i can tell you now sometimes they are absolutely hopeless at correcting errors so dont believe everything harvey bobbles says, take it with a pinch of salt
no offence harvey but if you had the car im sure you would be climbing a wall now just like i would be
