Now Urgent! Truro/Falmouth/Helston, possibly Par

I recently moved from Truro to Falmouth and have to say I much prefer Truro and will happily admit to being biased. Falmouth is having regeneration money thrown at it for a reason. That being said, the Police do seem to be taking a very pro-active approach to anti-social behaviour in Falmouth.
If central Truro is too expensive maybe think of somewhere like Threemilestone where houses are more affordable? There are also pockets of houses being built just on the outskirts of Truro, like towards Penmount, where you are slightly in the countryside, but the City is accessible.
I do know the area well, so do feel free to PM me if you think I can be of any help. If you find somewhere you like but are unsure of the area, I may be able to give you the inside track.
Good luck.I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break

Thanks both!
Careful, will take you up on your offer in the next few days.
Anyone out there with views on Helston?"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes" - Erasmus0 -

I would urge caution over both Threemilestone and Penmount areas. Firstly there is a long standing plan to build a new "stadium for Cornwall" on the outskirts of Truro. The Threemilestone area is the favoured option, and already overloaded with traffic for the college, out of town shopping and Cornwall's main hospital all being fed along a single road. The stadium will obviously add to this congestion.
Similarly, Penmount, whilst pretty tranquil at the moment, is also under attack from a proposed park and ride complex and a major new shopping centre, including a Cornish Produce Food Hall.
Both these projects will probably enhance the area as a shopping and tourist centre and bring in business, but local road infrastructure is already overloaded, so will definately have its drawbacks for residents!0 -
The last I heard of the plan, was the stadium would be in the area of the old Richard Lander school and that all plans would include the extension of a road along the old railway tracks at the back of Threemilestone. That being said, I broadly agree with what you bring up and would anticipate any switched on solicitor would be aware of these issues and would ensure the appropriate searches were carried out.
I used these places more as examples of the housing options in the outer-lying areas of Truro. There is no getting away from the problems you refer to with the infrastructure and there doesn't seem to be a well thought out long-term plan to solve these. However, I do think it means that any considerations regarding major building plans will be forced to look at the issues of overloading as a high priority and be expected to minimise any impact. For example, the Park and Ride has eased congestion somewhat on the A390 and parking at Treliske etc.
My suspicion is that the new houses currently being built off the Treliske roundabout will eventually continue along and merge with Threemilestone and possibly even extend as far along as Chacewater.
You can go ahead with moving to an area if you have decided that any possible plans for the future aren't going to put you off or decide that their impact will have a negative impact on your enjoyment and decide against it. It is important to be aware of the issues though.I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break

Have a look at Constantine, beautiful village slap bang between Helston and Falmouth (about 5 miles to either), roughly about 15 miles to Truro. Perfect for anyone looking for a quiet life.0

We've lived in Helston, Par & Truro!
To be honest, if the Navy were not in Helston no local businesses would survive. There is not a great deal to do in Helston, there are a couple of ok-ish restaurants and a tiny cinema. There is a big Tesco, a Sainsburys, Lidl & a Co-Op.
There is a lovely boating lake with a cafe in town. There are loads of little villages around Helston which are actually nicer than Helston itself.
To get to Truro say for 9am, it can take about an hour.
We lived in Truro for a while and it was so much easier to get around from Truro, especially if you want a social life as taxis in the Helston area charge to come & collect you as well as your normal fare and if it's after midnight they tend to charge about £9 per mile. The better variety of activities are in Truro or Falmouth.
Most train links go via Redruth which is about 20-25 min drive from Helston.
We stayed in Par for a while and found it really quiet with no shops to look at etc. At least Truro & Falmouth have M&S and a few other main stores even though they are smaller branches.
Helston feels really safe, we had no problems there but if you want a social life, amenities I would go for Truro.0 -
I moved from London to Falmouth and luvv luvv luvv it, we are just on the outskirts 5 mins drive or 20 min walk to the beach 8 min walk to the town centre and would not live anywhere else, we did rent in Truro for a few months was ok, but depends which part you would be looking at.0

Dear all
Back and panicking! I am now SSTC (woo!). But there are time pressures. Multiple visits starting this weekend to try and find somewhere.
Still considering the 3 areas. Am after either a large 2 bed bungalow or preferably a 3 bed. Ideally kitchen/diner and a 2nd loo if not 2nd bath/ensuite. Possibly somewhat idealistically max £250000.
Truro - lot of stuff in Highertown coming on the market but a bit wary cos of recent announcement re Richard Lander site just sold for housing. There are some possiblities in Redannick - anyone know if that is good or bad areas?
Falmouth - dearth of bungalows generally, but some on the outer areas. Anywhere other than Beacon estate that should be avoided?
Helston - on visit really liked the feel of the place, but obviously that much further down and away from family/friends in Truro/Wadebridge. Are there any particularly good/bad areas again? Currently considering Sanctuary Lane/Hellis Wartha/Trenethick Ave/Parc Eglos.
Any and all suggestions gratefully received - and open invite to a pint down the pub when it's all done and dusted:)"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes" - Erasmus0 -

I don't know that much about the areas you mention, but with Highertown, I would avoid the Malabar estate like the plague. That's the one one on the same side as the golf course.
A little bit further along outside Truro towards Chacewater is an area called Gloweth - behind Truro College that is supposed to be good for families and there are a few pockets of new builds springing up around there.
Be aware that the area of ground around Maiden Green roundabout is being earmarked for a large housing estate, so big they are talking about it having its own ASDA.
Maybe consider out towards Chacewater/St Day/Blackwater/Mount Hawke (although not the newer estate).
I second avoiding the Beacon estate but also the areas around Old Hill (where I am fortunate enough to live, albeit temporarily). Has a dreadful reputation, but if you keep yourself to yourself, it's tolerable and if you are lucky enough to have good neighbours there are pockets that have a nice sense of community.
Penryn on the outskirts of Falmouth is OK, as is the area around Gyllyngvase Beach, although I suspect they are more pricey.
My Dad and his wife have lived in Cornwall for very much longer than I have, so feel free to PM my again if you narrow down areas and I can ask them. His wife used to be a teacher so she tends to know the bad bits well! I'll ask them about Redannick etc tomorrow.
Are you in a position where you could perhaps move down here to rented accommodation so you can get to know areas that way? What I may like may be totally different to what you like.
p.s. Falmouth has just appointed a new CSO (I'll find his name for you); may be worth giving him a call and picking his brains. Also, I am happy to post you property sections of local papers if that would be helpful?I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break
