I can't deal with this. There should be compulsory classes on this in school I've lost hundreds of pounds for nothing.

this is so right.. art and french lessons in school are REALLY helping me out these days in the UK , my !!!!.

with how complex, and tricky and sly the whole world works, you should be taught everything about apr and tax and renting houses, and important things needed for REAL life etc in school, thats what young people REALLY need to know, or you end up in total !!!!, like me.

Agreed out of all my friends I'm the only one not in debt despite having the most unreliable income yet I'm still a lot worse with money than I used to be. When I sorted my clothes for moving I started to chuck the ones out, I have some many clothes I've kept from ages ago (like for four years) that I hate that I wear all the time because I've never got round to washing my nice things and loads of clothes i don't wear. I almost cried at the waste of money, especially since I never get to wear the nice ones. I will now though but seriously I wish I'd realised my issue sooner. That I like having less clothes than more so I can see what there is.
  • OP is there no chance of staying with friends/family until you get the new place sorted?

I would leave the problems with the old house, you are not getting the extra rent back, speak to your old LL and arrange a payment plan for the electric bill. Then go to small claims to get the money back from your ex-flatmate.

If the estate agent is admitting that they have sent the paperwork late and it is now processing you should have no problems with that. You will need to ask the estate agent about the ID issue. If they refuse to allow your bf to move in without a driving license, then I suggest you arrange to have his name taken off until such time as he can provide ID. That way you can move in.

I noted you mentioned you did not have insurance on your old property. I take it you are getting insurance now? Many LL will not rent out without proof of contents insurance.

The one thing that leapt out of the original post was why don't schools have classes on this kind of thing. In the final year at school when some subjects are dropped an extra subject on life after leaving school would be very beneficial to most school leavers.
    It's someone else's fault.

Schools do teach things like this as part of PSHE which is delivered in different ways depending on the school, put primarily through form time.

Even if you did want it as a stand-alone lesson, there is no time in the GCSE timetable for it. Subjects are dropped as you need more hours to cover the GCSE level content.

From the OPs posts I don't see where lessons on house renting would help in any case.

I googled removing mildew we don't have the time to scrape out sealant and replace it (no money for sealant *shrug*)

A bottle of cilit bang or some bleach will shift mildew. 50p for a bottle of cheap bleach would have been a good investment for you. New sealant would be less than £5. Even if you had to do both it would cost you far less than you will lose from your deposit.

there's mildew in the shower I didn't realise we could be liable for that I always thought mildew was a structure thing you know like the property letting in damp. Sigh.

Do you mean that you've just left it there and not cleaned it off - all through the tenancy?

Those classes exist, most of us in our school skipped them because we were more concerned with actually doing proper academic work and getting good marks to further our careers!

Renting a property from someone isn't rocket science, most people have the common sense to get through it just fine. Unfortunately though the odd hiccup comes up every now and again, which they wouldn't have even thought to teach in lessons anyway!

Mildew is usually caused by inadequate ventilation. Basically every time you have a shower or a bath you need to ventilate the room to the *outside* of the property. That means opening a window or turning on the extractor. It lets the heat out, but if you don't do it then you get mildew.

Mildew can also be removed fairly easily with a scourer and some cleaning product, although it does stain grout and sealant if left for too long. We've had good luck though with a CIF product called "power foam". Seems to remove much of the staining.

Actually I've never had any lessons like that in school. I had one on condoms, one on periods and in college the college accountant was kind enough to demonstrate budgeting for uni, I actually was pretty good with my student loan up until I deferred. I performed well in my academics but I think people need more education on balancing money the legal aspects of tenancy's. A lot of things are not explained and looking terms up isn't always that helpful.

I do have common sense but it is a lot of things all at once. It probably seems like second nature to you guys. I've had to deal with a lot since leaving home for uni. My mum withdrew from me because she couldn't deal with me leaving. My dad got married to a woman I don't get on with who talks about me with my aunty probably saying things like 'she left university to become a stripper!' Which of course isn't true. So I felt like I'd gone from being unconditionally loved to abandoned, I was in halls with a lot of people I couldn't relate to, I withdrew, got lonely, got depressed couldn't get up to feed myself anymore. Felt trapped. Left university temporarily to make a home and friends for myself, got a job I thought I'd never have the confidence to do learnt everything on the job, dealt with my income collapsing. Supported my unemployed boyfriend. Dealt with a flatmate who's 26 and leaves me with the bills all the time, dealt with theft. So yeah little things like signing up to a new doctor, finding a dentist, travelling on an aeroplane are things I've never done before, I've had a tenancy with this guy but the new estate agent is entirely different. These are all firsts for me there all at once and my memory has always been terrible. I'm terrified, I sometimes think maybe I should have left dealing with the real world till after university.

There are far worst off people than me, but I feel pretty weak and oblivious to all of this. I don't feel like an adult but I refuse to give up what I have made for myself there's been times me and my boyfriend have been huddled saying we can't do this any more it's too hard. He's even less adjusted to it than me at 21 he has little self belief and feels his life achievements amount to little. He downplays his intelligence.
