Paypal Chargeback question

Before I embark on trawling through the paypla help pages I was wondering if anyone here knew the answer to my question off the top of their head?

I sent out a 99p item on 26th June and today I received an email from paypal stating the payment had been reversed (something to do with a bank reversal / chargeback). The total of the payment is a whopping £2.69!!

Paypal have asked me for tracking info. I assume so they can see if I am covered by seller protection as it was a confirmed address and it said 'eligible' in the payment.

However as it was a 99p item I only sent it by standard mail with COP. I know if it were an INR case this wouldn't be sufficient. Howevre this is a chargeback and I seem to think that for a chargeback I only had to prove I SENT it to the paypal registered address.

I am right or am I getting my wires crossed?

I know £2.69 is not the end of the world but I am just wanting to get the 'regulations' straight in my own head.

It depends on the reason for the chargeback.
If it was done because the credit card holder claimed unauthorised use of their card, then all you need to provide is proof of postage. However if the chargeback was carried out because the buyer claimed that the goods were not delivered, then you need to provide proof of delivery.

Sounds like the former to me - in which case proof of posting is what you need. Good luck.

  • Just double checked in 'my ebay' and he paid on 26th June and I sent it on 28th June and dispute was started 1st July. This all seems a little quick for an INR claim so I suspect it is 'unautorised use of card' claim. Is there anyway to actually find out? The email just states payment has been reversed by the buyers bank. I just logged into view the dispute and the only option I have is to enter a tracking number (which I don't have). Is it worth me going to the trouble of emailing paypal and scanning and uploading the COP?...all for less than £3??

You have to decide that for yourself, but if they want tracking, then they probably won't accept a scanned proof of posting.

    'unautorised use of card'

The type of chargeback is stated in your post. So in that case proof of postage is all you need.

    Soolin,
The "unautorised use of card" is only what the OP thinks and not what ebay or paypal have told them.

Yes that is all it states in the paypal email, but couldn't it have been reversed for a either 'unauthorised use of card' or 'because the buyer is claiming INR?

It is just they are asking for a tracking number??

Paypal never know their own rules, a claim for INR will look different and won't mention the bank reversal.

    Hi
I have the same problem, in that I sold an item for £8 last week, and posted it the day the person paid. They have left feedback thanking me for the speedy delivery, but today I received an email from paypal saying that their bank have reversed the transaction so they are holding the money. As yet they havn't asked for any further information and have just said that they may need it. Could anyone give me advice on what is likely to happen next. Thanks
