Its not secret, Tony Blair used his only veto to opt out of directive 1999/44/EC as he was taking huge donations from the (unnamed) person who owned master care that just happens to now be a Lord.

Looking through that legislation, it's not really that different to the UK SOGA. (except the SOGA gives the consumer up to 6 years to attempt to clain).

1999/44/EC states that for a fault reported within 6 months of purchase must be assumed to have been there at the time of sale (the same as the SOGA states) and after 6 months, this onus is on the buyer to prove the goods were faulty. (again, the same as the SOGA)

Regulation 1999/44 has been implemented in the UK as part of the Sale and supply of goods to consumers regulations. The 2 year requirement was not stated as it was considered that the Sale and Supply act was giving more protection to consumers than the EU regulation alone.

It was not vetoed. It was implemented in 2002.

These Regulations implement Directive 1999/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the
Council of 25th May 1999 on certain aspects of the sale of consumer goods and associated
guarantees, referred to below as “the Directive” (OJ No. L 171, 7.7.99, p. 12).

Thank you for that amusing post, however others seem to have beaten me to the response by providing you with the correct information.

A bit like the thread about not buying stuff from the CI as the OP said it was mostly all fakes from the CI. Another classic thread.

I would like to warn people that Argos now only insure their items for 6 months. So the statutory 12 months guarntee will have to be witheld by the manufacturers if its a fault that develops from 6 to 12 months. They will like all outlets try and sell you cover.
There is no such thing as a statutory 12 month guarantee :wall:. Any warranty offered tends to be from the manufacturer and there is no legal requirement to offer any kind of warranty at that.
