If the fraction of a penny which 0844 g6 numbers have gone up due to the VAT increase is deemed as important, then the 12.5p "Call Set-up Fee" must be even more important due to its effect on the cost of each individual call*, yet I do not believe it has been mentioned in this thread.

    * The longer the call, the less it increases the call as a proportion of the per minute rate. The highest (price wise) band 0844 numbers are g6 and now cost 5.105ppm (5ppm prior to VAT increase). So that's an increase of 0.105ppm and if we take the Call Set-up Fee and divide it by that value, we get 119min. So a call would have to last almost two hours before the increase in per minute rate due to the VAT increase was more significant than the Call Set-up Fee.

Also not considered thus far is BT's call price rounding policy whereby each call charge is rounded up to the next whole penny after adding VAT (for VAT inclusive billing).

Virgin Media charges 0844 calls in whole minute intervals whereas BT rounds them up to the next whole second.

When get any number either 0844 45 or 0870 I use say not to 0870 to check local number is available just in case, though could not get round the tv licence 0300.
But why would you neeed/want to?

03 numbers are charged at the same rate as 01 or 02 numbers and, if you have an inclusive package, are inclusive.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Indeed! Why would you need to avoid calling 03 numbers?

What about using a Tesco Lite sim in an unused phone?

0844 numbers at 8p a minute but remember there is no call set-up fee.

If you are using your landline mainly for 08 calls it can be cheaper to ditch it completely and go mobile.

    giffgaff sim: 0800 numbers free

    Tesco Lite sim: 0844, 0845, 0870 all 8p a minute (from memory)

    Lyca sim: for calling abroad.
