Tax expired yesterday, auto fine?

Hi

Found out my dad is taxing his car today but it expired yesterday. (He forgot June has only 30 days).

I'm panicking on his behalf because I'm worried about the automatic fine (he really can't afford it - that's another story).

Will he get fined even though it's half a day late?

My understanding is that you get a few days 'grace'. Best to get it sorted as soon as if you can, its not worth the fine.

It ran out yesterday though? I thought you had to do it before old expires?

You don't get any grace, unless you've renewed online before the expiry of the old one.

However, as the old one expired at midnight last night, and the new one will start today, there will be no period where the vehicle is untaxed.

    You can stop worrying.

I forgot to renew ours which ran out at end of April and couldn't get car booked in for an MOT until 10 May so couldn't renew until then. I parked it on the drive for the period it was untaxed and only drove it to the MOT centre on the day it was booked in. My research at the time said that was ok. You only need to SORN if it will be more than 14 days after the expiry of the tax disc before you can get it booked in for the MOT.

We didn't get an automatic fine, and as it's now July I guess it would have arrived by now if we were going to. I think the only time you will get into difficulties is if you drive it or leave it parked in the street with no valid tax disc and are caught, or if you don't renew or SORN within 14 days.

    Thanks for the replies.

Taxed it today as planned. Can't believe the things my dad does (or doesn't do) sometimes!

you now get a little known month grace period. the dvla wont issue a penalty if it's seen on the road without tax as long as you re-lic it within the same month.
    for example...
    vel expired 28.02.11
veh seen on road 25.03.11 and reported by traffic warden etc
    veh re-lic 26.03.11 (its gotta start 01.03.11)
no penalty issued as no loss of revenue.

but bear in mind the "failure to display" penalty issued by the police and separate to dvla penalty

this rule applies to register keeper who have a v5 logbook in their name only. it doesnt apply to new keepers

If you renewed online before the expiry of your old one, why would you need any grace???

I think you are confusing the 5 days grace allowed to display the disc if you buy online before the expiry of the old one with the OP's question regarding the automatic fine issued if you don't renew and don't SORN.
