    Hi kell.b

Starting your own business is definitely the way to go especially with the current state of the economy and the power of the internet.

I lost my job last year and after 6 months of applying never even got an interview never mind a job, so I turned to the internet to find a legitimate (which wasn't easy) work from home/business opportunity and I haven't looked back, I only wish I'd done it sooner.

I've got tons of info on the subject and am actually in the process of setting up a website but am happy to help you for free before it goes live if you want?

    Regards

    Gary

Many thanks for the offer. I've got the idea, I've got 2 people that can help me set up a website, I've got a few contacts via my friend who's set her business up, but I've just not got any spare cash to go and get stock and actually set up.

It's frustrating as I spent months searching the internet and speaking to a guy at Business Link and there are no grants or funds etc to help with this now. As this is something that would get me off JSA you think the government would have some funding available as it would save them money in the long run.

    "Self-employment credit

If you have been unemployed and getting Jobseeker's Allowance for 13 weeks or more, and you set up as self-employed working at least 16 hours a week, you may be able to get a self-employment credit worth £50 a week. You can only get it if you stop claiming Jobseeker's Allowance and expect your work to last at least 5 weeks. Ask at your local Jobcentre Plus office for more details."

    Or theres this

    "New Enterprise Allowance

If you are unemployed, you may be able to claim New Enterprise Allowance to help you start a business. It is available in certain areas only from April 2011, and will not be available nationally until Autumn 2011. New Enterprise Allowance is part of the Employment, Skills and Enterprise Scheme."

Wish the job centre had told me about this. I keep asking them if there's any funding to do courses (I want to do audio typing), and keep getting told no. I've discussed with them that I had a chance to join my friends business and if there was any type of funding/grants and was told no. Knowing my luck it won't be available to me.

Hmm I've only just become unemployed since today - I work in a job whereby it's contract hours, it ends every June/July and then I have to re-apply and go through interview process every year :( It starts feeling a bit demeaning to be honest :( (I work in a college supporting adults with vulnerable needs). I have applied for jobs left, right and centre because - as much as I love the job that I do - I really don't want to go through this every year.
So I can sign on until I find a job or party plan? The self employment credit wouldn't be available to me now then and to be honest I hope to start in a new job before 13 weeks but many thanks for your info and help Ypaymore x
