Mopeds are out of the question as I have epilepsy and you're not allowed to ride these by law. I do have a bike but I'm not confident on the road so would not do this. As for someone else to drive me to work, my boyfriend works as a taxi driver so with his shifts and sleep patterns it wouldn't work
I have been applying for anything and everything and still no luck. I applied for a retail assistant at a local chemist and never heard back. Many people when they see my background think that I would either be board in the role or that my skills aren't suitable. One problem I have, like many others, is the minimum wage. It cheaper to get a 18 year old with no experience then to employ me a 32 year old with no experience.
So anyone else get any ideas. As I said, I don't mind how weird and wacky
Although I haven't been unemployed, there were times when I needed additional work and took on bar work. As you have found, companies thought I had too much experience or experience in the wrong field. I toned down my CV / interview in these situations and found this worked.
When I was 18 I moved to Bristol with just £65 in my purse and no where to live. It was an agency who got me my first temp role and this actually turned into a permanant role. It can be a good way to get into somewhere. They told me where the job was before I agreed to accept, so you don't suddenly turn up somewhere where you don't want to work.

All I can see are excuses as to why you can't do most of the ideas presented thus far. Why not go to a temp agency? If you need a job, have been unemployed for almost a year and are living off benefits, I think your reasons for turning down agency work are pretty poor.
Are you aware of the current furore in the news about British jobs for British workers and the overwhelming conclusion across business fora that indeed young British people are lazy, nothing is good enough for them and their expectations are too high? Whilst i would like to disagree on the whole, the attitude you convey in this thread is the reason why employers think the way they do. After reading this thread, I wouldn't employ you!
It sounds like you're looking for an easy, no-work idea that will be fun at the same time and reap lots of financial rewards. Good luck with that - most of us are working our butts off during this recession, whether in business or doing lowly jobs that they're over- qualified for just to make ends meet.
And your excuses about agencies are just terrible - I don't even know where to start with that one. I take it you have quite a history with a few companies you have been to that you are shy of going back. As you know, you usually are told the name of the company before hand so you could always turn it down!
Or maybe the OP just lacks confidence having been out of work for some time.0 -

Sorry but I have to disagree with everything you have said. I am not lazy or work shy and never have been. Your comments are totally unfounded and very insulting. To presume that I am looking for an easy no-work idea, again is totally wrong. I am a hardworker and I too in the past have had to take jobs I'm overqualified for.
The reasons I don't like not knowing where a agency job is, is because there is one company I would not want to return to as they were a terrible company to work for, and I can't just work anywhere due to where I live and having to use public transport which is limited. To presume I have had some kind of checked worked history, again, is insulting.
Comments like yours are not helpful and certainly don't help me with a confindence level that is seriously going down and down. I came here for help, not to be insulted and labelled lazy.0 -
Just Plain Jane, you are spot on. My confidence level is very low. I've been applying for jobs left, right and centre and in all manner of things that I have no experience in, just to get my foot back on the ladder, but I either hear nothing back or get a rejection letter. So is it any wonder I don't have the same level of confidence.
I asked my question to see if there were any job options that I just hadn't thought of, I always find if I look to hard I miss something. Thank you to everyone that has replied, except those that have insulted me.0 -
Whilst I understand why you think I have insulted you (and maybe it comes across that way), I read your posts from an objective point of view and it just read like a long list of excuses to me. Your comments about not even bothering to try to get agency work for various reasons annoyed me a little. No matter what was suggested, there was some reason you couldn't do it.
Until I started my business, I used to do a four hour round trip to work in another city for £15k doing admin. My previous post before that was senior management earning £32k per year, from which I was made redundant. I couldn't get back into my niche post as the building industry collapsed so I had to set my sights a bit lower to help my hubby pay the mortgage. My confidence was shot to bits whilst unemployed. I rarely got rejection letters - mostly no response at all. I worked like a dog to find any job, temping too. I was unemployed a total of three months.
Whilst it was a pain to get to work, it was well beneath me, travel cost a thirds of my take home and a thirty minute walk to the station at six o clock in the morning and I hated the job, I did this for 18 months whilst launching my own biz. So that's why I responded the way I did to your excuses. If the will is there, it can be done.
Thank you for responding. I have looked at agencies, it's not something I've ruled out completly, but I'd rather not do that. I had experience with 3 agencies, even having work through one of them, but I just found they didn't treat me very well and on one occassion I wasn't paid the correct amount, and don't inspire confindence in me to go down that route again. Not everything is an excuse, because of my epilepsy there are things I cannot do by law, ie drive a moped, and even some jobs. So it's not always me being fussy.
The problem I have with any job is travel. My first 2 months wages would just be covering my overdraft, I don't have any spare money to afford travel. My last job I often spent nearly 3 hours a day on a bus getting to work and back, so I have done it. In 2 years I was made redundant twice so I have no savings whatsoever. The ideas I'm looking for is something I might be able to do from home that I just haven't thought of, so that I can get my finances straight without an added outlay. It's not being lazy and wanting a easy way out, I just want to maximise my earning so that I can get myself back on the straight and narrow financially.
I have a business idea but I can't go anywhere with it. I spent over 6 months reseaching if I could get funding to help with start up costs etc but all funding has gone apart from the Princes Trust and you have to be aged 18-24. My friend has set herself up in business but she had a small amount of money to do this where as I didn't so couldn't join her. She'd love to be able to employ me but because the business is still up and running she doesn't have the funds to do this yet. It's annoying as my business idea fits right in with her business but with no money for start up costs I can't.0 -
Any of these of any interest to you?
http://www.peopleperhour.com/freelance_jobs_work_projects/listings/admin
There are quite a few vacancies, working remotely, so no travel expenses involved.
Good luck - I know only too well how soul destroying it can be to get nothing but rejection letters (if you're even lucky enough to get THAT as a response).0 -

Have you used peopleperhour yourself? I Googled them a while back and read quite a few bad stories that it put me off using it. Plus I'd be concerned that not all the jobs are real and if I'd be paid.0 -
No. I've not used them myself. But my friend has (she has her own training consultancy), and has managed to get quite a bit of business from that site when her business went a bit quiet.0

Thanks for the reply. I'll do a bit more research via Google and see if it's ideal for me. The only other thing with these type of sites is that it wouldn't even come close to a part time wage with work not being on a regular basis, but I would still have to declare it to the Job Centre, so I'm not sure if it's worth it Does anyone else has experience of these types of sites. I don't want to start doing things through them and then lose most of my JSA for a few extra quid.0 -
Try www.odesk.com
I am currently working through this site and getting a job is easy if you bid low to start. For example, if you are prepared to write a 300 word article for $2, meaning a maximum of $6 an hour, you will find work easily but your work must be good quality.
Once you've gotten some good feedback you can up your prices a bit.
I guess peopleperhour.com is similar - I registered with that site ages ago, but prefer the layout of odesk.com.0
