Inspired by the fab felt creations that I spotted on this thread:
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3282008
I thought I'd have a bit of a look and see what other things you could make with felt. I was amazed at some of the things that I found - check out this cake:

I've ordered a couple of kits for me to start with but they're coming from Canada so I bet I'll be waiting a few weeks before they arrive, in the meantime I've ordered this book. Anyway I wondered if any other MSEers crafted with felt - I'd love to see some pics and also pick your brains about the best supplies to use - thanks!

wow that cake looks interesting to make.
next next task when i get 5 mins, on top of all else i'm making and the fact i'm having a baby in just over 6 weeks, lol. is to make some felt hair sleeper/slide. i've seen so many tutorials and they look so nice.i just hope i get some spare time soon,lol.0 -
thisuseridistakenagain - thanks for the link to your shop - you have some fab things - love the ninja keyring!!!! What would you suggest I buy as a beginner? I thought I'd wait until my book arrives before I order the felt so that I know what colours I'll need. I was also thinking of getting a load of different colour cottons as I only have a couple. I make greetings cards so I've already got quite a bit of ribbon and gems but I wondered whether I could do with getting some beads. Thanks for any help you can give!
jcr16 - I can't believe how much you manage to make! Good luck with your new arrival - are you having a boy or a girl? My pink bundle arrived on the 5th April, I've already got 3 boys but now I figured that with having a girl I've got someone to make all these cute things for. I've just been looking at some felt hair slides on ebay - they do look good.0 -
were having another little boy. my eldest is a girl , then i shal have 3 younger boys. exciting stuff.
i think i've only been able to make so much as where hubby is on nights, i need to keep occupiyed other wise i shall miss him soooo much. having said that i only got half way through making my new garland before falling asleep, lol. so mission tonight once finished painting the kitchen walls is to try to finish it. congrats on your pink bundle.0 -
To start with I'd get a selection of A4 sheets from hobbycraft they are around 50p a sheet and have loads of colours.
I've since upgraded to buying entire rolls of felt, but started with A4!
I started by making simple flowers for example with this pattern you can make something like this with very little sewing involved. I sell those at around £6 each and they don't take long.
One thing I cant do without is a tiny pair of embroidery scissors, those are a must have. Also the threads, you can buy a mega pack of 30 skeins in poundland all different colours, those would be ideal. Or any cheap thread bundle would be great.
You could get some beads, maybe some silver glass seed beads for a bit of sparkle. I use buttons a fair bit too.
If you get started, simple flat felt shapes look stunning as card toppers. Just a star or flower shape gives it a bit of texture. It only takes a second to say 'Thanks, you just saved me a few quid!'

jcr16 - so I'm the opposite to you then with my daughter being the youngest! My number 3 child is still awake so no crafting for me - he's 2 in August. Can't wait to see your garland!
thisuseridistakenagain - thanks so much for all the advice - I think there is a hobbycraft nearby but because I don't drive and I've got two little ones I don't really get out much - I tend to do all my shopping online. I had loads of embroidery threads from when I used to cross stitch but I can't remember where I put them now - I'll have to have a look for them tomorrow - it'll save me buying some more.
Thanks for the links to the flowers - I've got a die cutting machine and a few flower dies so I was going to try cutting some out with the felt - I figured it'd be easier than cutting it out by hand. I've got a few buttons but I'll have a look on ebay for some glass beads.0 -
I love crafting with felt! I sew everything by hand and find it so much easier than normal fabric, it's quite forgiving.
I'm currently making an advent calender for Christmas which is 24 stockings, 12 made from felt and 12 from normal fabric, which are hung up in a row on some ribbon and filled with mini goodies
I haven't finished it yet but will post a pic when I'm done. A couple of Christmases ago I made some of these
My favourite thing I've ever made with felt is this:
Which is this, a baby murloc pet from World of Warcraft
The DoctorD'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0 -
