I'm determined now, but am gonna wait till boxing day, am staying at me sisters over xmas so he'll be too unstelled.

don't be so sure about that! my ds got rid of his dummy when my sister took it off him while we stayed at her house over new year. I had tried for ages to get it off him but he cried for hours and I gave in. When we were at my sisters his dummy went "missing" and she told him that big boys didn't have do-do's in her house so he had to go to bed without it. He did and never asked for it again! I was gobsmacked how easily he took NO from his auntie after months of me telling him he had to give it up.

Sometimes auntie etc is the best person to take "it" (whatever it maybe) away
  • awww, i'm a wimp and would have bought him another bottle, but then my eldest had his bedtime bottle until he was 4  he had cups the rest of the time and the bottle only contained water, but 4 is quite old to give it up. then again i know plenty of kids who didn't give up dummies until 4.

roo is 16 months old and still has a breakfast and bedtime bottle with milk, and drinks from cups during the day. part of not giving up the bottle is that he's messy and thinks it's fun to tip cups upside down, spray them around the room or chuck them on the floor where they often come open. water and milk are completely different in those circumstances lol!

i got some tommy tippee cups with a valve so they're non-spill. i bought 4 of the insulated straw cups but none of them lasted a month, they leak. he doesn't like avent cups. i bought a tommee tippee one from tesco the other day, it doesn't have a straw inside, it has a kind of straw thing on top with the valve so it's non-spill but they have to tip it up to drink from it. i think that's quite similar to a bottle and am going to try it for his breakfast milk when he's got over his tummy bug and is back onto food and milk.

then eventually will try to get him onto a cup for bedtime milk but i don't know when, i'm happy for him to be a big baby at bedtime as long as he's using cups during the day. lots of kids his age have bottles and dummies for bed, but nobody else sees them so everyone thinks their child is the only one to still use one.

good luck with it all astonsmummy. at 2.5 my babe might still be having a bottle at bedtime because i'm such a soft touch!

When DS3 was a similar age, we managed to leave Clownie (favourite toy) at school one Friday! Clownie didn't usually go to school with us, but somehow he had snuck out with us, and by the time I realised there was no chance of retrieving him. So I told DS3 I was sorry but I thought Clownie must be at school, and I hoped he wouldn't be frightened there.

And DS3 looked at his other toys, picked out a penguin, and took him to bed instead of Clownie. I didn't comment until we'd retrieved Clownie on Monday, and said how grown up he'd been to manage with Penguin instead of Clownie, and was told that Penguin was the 'right' shape. Which he was ... although with fewer limbs ... :rotfl:

OK it's hard, but at 2+ they can start to understand "Gone" and "Broken", can't they?

Not that I blame you for nipping out for another one: I'd have gone and got Clownie if I could have done!

I would use a story that another baby needs the bottle and there aren't enough for big boys - then encourage him to try the non-spill cup.

Thankfully my wee one didn't get too attached to his bottle - I took it away as soon as he turned 1 so he had no idea what was going on.:o I will take his dummy away when he reaches 2 - but that might be more of a battle, cos he is a strong willed wee monster!:rotfl:

  • mine is very strong willed. the dentist told me to get rid of dummies and teats before the birthday but i didn't, and now i see what he means because it's become a comfort thing and he's very fond of him dummies, much more than before he was 1.
