    How to measure mpg:

Fill the car fuel tank up to the brim. Zero the mileometer.

Drive normally till the next fill up point. Record the mileage and the amount of fuel needed to again fill the tank up to the brim.

Then work out: miles per gallon = 4.545 x distance / litres fuel

Example: Car travels 480 miles and uses 46.4 litres of fuel.

    mpg is then = 4.545 x 480 / 46.4 = 47 miles per gallon

    Hope this helps. :)

Maybe you need Plan B then sillysi:D

Wait till you next run out. Zero the mileometer.

Walk normally to next fill up point. Buy 4.545 litres in your red can.

Walk back to car with one arm longer than the other.

Pour in contents of red can and drive off.

Wait till you next run out.

Then note directly: miles per gallon = number of miles on your mileometer:D

    Merry Christmas!!!

    yeh, that's how I do it :)

as an aside...if it will cost that much to fill your tank up, you're probably running with it pretty empty - this isn't overly good for the car and you're better off filling it up once then keeping on topping it up.
  • You could always buy a car with an on board computer fitted. A couple of cicks with your thumb will tell you your instantaneous m.p.g., m.p.g. since last reset, how far you've travelled, time (in Singapore) outside temperature (in Addis Adaba), peso/dollar exchange rate etc.etc.etc.

As mentioned in 'how to save fuel' threads, while it certainly IS a big chunk of £$£$ to find to fill up, in just one go, but....

IT WILL SAVE in the long run - both £$£$ & time. Simply 'cos you have to journey to the petrol station more often, to put a £10 or however much in, each time.

Even if you do it as your passing, there's a good chance you're buying more expensive fuel, too!!

I'm always keen to promote Shell & their points scheme, but if you can fill it at say, Asda, when shopping, you'll be able to work it out & hopefully save a few pennies too!!

It cost me £70 to fill up yesterday.
    I have a cunning plan!
Proud to be dealing with my debts.

i'm lucky with that one. I work opposite an Asda.

It's still difficult to work out your MPG with an onboard computer as it constantly changes and is pretty slow to move up - unless my computer is FUBAR'ed
plus it changes with everything, how much weight you're carrying (i've got 2 spare (car) tyres), if you've got a window open, air con on etc etc

You'd be better putting £10 of fuel in, on five different occassions. You'll save a fortune...

   ;)
