RTFM ! certainly lol -- it really does not help (novice users esp. i mean ) though that manuals are now - predominantly - in pdf format as opposed to a printed hard-copy.A new abacus

If it takes that long then you are doing something badly wrong ... a couple of hours max for me for OS and all progs I need , at the very most!
A slight exaggeration possibly ... ?
To update 100 separate updates? think not!
That's just on the 12th) when i did a fresh install!
Took over an hour for Windows to actually download the updates.
Then it took on average 5 mins each update (not counting the failed updates that require to be installed separately from ANY other update).
10 reboots of the machine was required for all the 100 updates to be installed
roughly 6 hours not including the initial install!! and there were STILL updates to run the next day!!Laters

For some reason I can't fathom, people will learn how to use all kinds of useless rubbish and read the manuals that come with it but can't be bothered to learn how to use a computer properly.
that's far too true; they can configure their hard drive recorder to record 3 programmes at the same time and then use their mobile to get Sky+ to record the soaps while they programme their combination grill / oven / etc to come on at a certain time and cook their tea.
While that's cooking they've driven to Asda and done their shopping using the shopping list app on their iPhone, before buying the song that they heard on the radio and used the iPhone app to tell them what it was called.
Soaps recorded and watch, shopping away and tea eaten; time to relax and flick the computer on OMG !!! the cat's walked across the keyboard and the computer is broken... it's not doing what it should... will i lose everything??????0 -
Blow me down - now apple wants to do a 60MB update...........
This stuff must be so crap.....0 -
You can turn the updates off you know - you do not have to download them.0

Like a washing machine? They'll read the manuals for those.
Thankyou for proving how little you know. UAC has nothing to do with what I was on about.
ROFLMAO. What was that you were saying about UAC?
It has nothing to do with what you were on about because it was not directed at your point, it was directed at toskdcs point about admin accounts.
but talking about UAC, I am one of the few people who like UAC (like Trinitrotoluene), but I understand it and the theory behind it, to everyone else it just an anoying prompt.
Your argument is they should learn it, my argument is they should not have to. It provides no direct functionality to me as a consumer, it may save my bacon later but I can happily do what I want without learning this so why should i?
A lot of what you "should" know to use a computer are similarly non-functional, the majority of people are perfectly happy if it was taken care of for them. Take VCR clocks the bane of people existance for TV recording, now its done automatically and everyone is happy.
There are plenty of people walking around with smartphones and ipads who will never ever have root access to their system and will never care, why should a normal computer be any different ?
I am well aware that knowing that little more is usful (for everything) but requiring people to know these things has never worked out in the past and will continue to be futile.
and people dont really read manuals unless they are forced to because they have no choice, even then they are nice thin concise booklets. Where pc manuals at best are short textbooks which dont actually come with pc and doesn't contain everything you really need to know.0 -

I do an average of 10 installs a week of Windows XP. One reboot is all that was required and it takes about 20 minutes to download the typical 97 updates for a WinXP SP3 bare install.
It takes me no longer than 3hrs to do a full install, full updates, all drivers, the 5 applications I install with every machine (OpenOffice, MS Sec Essentials, VLC, CCleaner and Smartdefrag), clean out all the temp files and defrag the hard drives - and this is on Pentium M class laptops.0 -
