Hi receieved a letter today from a debt collection agency advising me to call them, i did and found out that they brought a debt from cpw.
I had a debt written off by cpw in 2007 and have a letter stating 'we have decided to write off and clear the balance on the above account'.
So why am i getting letters 4 years later telling me i owe the cpw money?
Can someone explain this to me as advice is needed
Thank you.

Hope you still have the letter.
Send off a copy to the Debt Collection Agency and CPW.
You could email it also to the CPW CEO (Roger Taylor) taylorr@cpwplc.com he won't personally sort it but may pass it on to someone who could.
This will have an effect on your credit profile, if it's been done in error you want it corrected.
Good luck and please update.

I think you need proper advice from the CAB or similar.
It could be a mistake or it could be that the debt collection agency have obtained details of the debt and are trying their luck (there is a market for lists of written off (or just old/expired) debts).
If you don't want to do that, then write to CPW and ask if they know what's happening.0 -
CAB is certainly a possibility as is a free half-hour consultation with a solicitor. Would you qualify for legal aid??
I would test the water first, it may get sorted once you produce a copy of your letter stating the debt has been written off.

I'm sure it will be a deliberate time-lag ploy by the debt-collector. 4 years is quite a long time to keep a letter.0

Thank you to all who have replied, very useful information.
I contacted the CAB who have given me some well needed advice and looks like ill have no problems from my side.
For some reason this is a letter i knew i had to keep as it would come back to bite and low and behold it did. Can you tell ive had problems with companies before...?!I most definitely will look into my credit reference and hopefully get, if anything, issues ammended.
Many thanks.0 -
I had something similar a few years ago and like you I kept the original letter from the original creditor. I just copied it and sent it to the debt collection agency. They didn't have the courtesy to reply but that was the end of the matter. It's someone else's fault.0

Hey all, I'm glad I logged on & researched this!! Back in 2006 I cancelled an O2 contract which was through the carphone warehouse. I received a snotty letter later that year saying I owed money & that I needed to pay immediately. I contacted the CPW & they said they never received notification from me. I sent a new letter (by recorded delivery) confirming the phone call & also included the original letter, both with contact details asking them to adivse what the outstanding amount was & also confirmation that things were being sorted. I also confirmed over the telephone that the phone was not used since cancelling & advised that I no longer had the sim card, so it wasn't like I was pulling a fast one - I already had a new contract with a more professional company! I never received anything in return. When giving both my phone number & address, I assumed that with no further contact this had been sorted.
Then earlier this week, I get a scary letter from Fredrickson International Limited (debt collectors for CPW) saying that I now owe near enough £400 (a joke when it was only a couple of months worth of contract fees in dispute) & that I had to pay immediately! I phoned the debt collectors & had the most unhelpful member of staff talking down at me saying that although I contacted the CPW originally, it was still my responsibility to chase up & pay up! (What more could I do, visit the CPW head office to discuss personally?!?!)
I have sent a new letter to the debt collectors this week, now including both letters from 2006 disputing the debt.
My question is, are they allowed to this after such a long period despite me trying to sort this back then?
Sorry to go on, but I am starting to lose sleep over this unorganised mess :-(0 -
There's one thing missing from your post, did you check that the recorded letter was received?0

Hi, yes I did, but even if it hadn't been received I don't understand why it's taken 5 years for more contact. I was in debt in the past & know how much contact you normally get when you owe money!0 -
hello everyone,
i've got this issue with cpw :
back in 2007 i had 2 contracts with cpw. in 2009 i received a debt recovery letter for nearly 300 quid. i fully paid it and i thought that was it. i haven't got those contracts or letters from cpw. 2 days ago i received a letter from a debt recovery agency. i called them and big surprise. they told i have got to pay 700 quid for cpw for a contract made in 2007. i asked to give me the evidence and they said it will take 6-7 weeks to send the agreement i had with cpw. now, this is strange as i thought i paid every last penny in 2009. please help me.
many thanks0
