Timothy, screen is black but can hear sound. It starts by the the picture rolling and striating then it goes black. Can't get the Guide or anything.

To add: It's OK at moment but dread it each time I switch it on that it will go black. So, it's an intermittent fault.

Is this an old CRT TV? If so I'd say that the tube is failing.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Not a CRT, it's an LCD flat screen about 5 years old.

Until you actually try changing things i.e. another Scart lead or plug in other equipment or try at friends etc, this is only going round in circles with speculation, help us to help you.

Floaty picture could be the tube, which means a dumped TV, or could be the SCART lead, or socket on the Freesat box or at the back of the TV. Easy test, try a different SCART socket in the TV, and try a different SCART socket on the Freesat (might have a VCR output). If still no joy, try another SCART lead.
With each of these tests, make sure to give the plug a good wiggle, SCART sockets get a fair bit of abuse and can be fragile.
