You said national newspapers - is Antiques Trade Gazette one of these??

And you are saying they might sue you but in the next breath are saying most chinese bidders do not pay.

You have not answered anything about taking it elsewhere or getting legal advice so I guess we can be assured that this is a wind up now.

Why is there always an eBay thread too? Are they just hoping for enough answers to get the ones they want?

I suspect when one set of people don't give the answer a poster wants they try another set of people. Unfortunately in this instance both sets of people are saying basically the same thing.

AS I sell in the antique and collectable market I was really prepared to go all the way with this thread, however I now believe there is a different story that we are perhaps not being told.

if it is actually a genuine antique - go through a legit auction house (their fees are on par with ebay) -
Someone else has said above, but worth pointing out again an auction house's fees on something like this would be substantially higher than Ebay's, they'd be charging 15-20% as well as taking similar on a buyer's premium and they won't have a £40 limit. Their charges however will cover all the aggravation of finding and subsequently dealing with a buyer, not to mention insurance, etc, etc.

If the teapot actually exists then I'm sure with verification and coverage that a reputable auction house gets then the chances are it will go for an awful lot more than on a few pics on ebay.
The auction house will receive the money & will be used to dealing with this type of transaction, so the seller could end up with substantially more.
I would love to know how the buyer & seller were going to recognise each other in a tube station, an Antiques Trade Gazette, rolled up under the arm & a plum blossom or whatever the national flower of China is in the lapel or earrings made from tea bags.
Hello, would you like to buy my teapot?
Follow me & we will complete this transaction in the public toilet. Just call me George.

Good point RFW - I hadn't realised at the point of posting they had an upper limit. :)
Still, an interesting topic - I wonder if this mysterious buyer is still waiting at the tube station :rotfl:? !
What's the betting that this teapot turns out to be a replica worth £10? Oh, the Irony!

    From the eBay thread:

Jun 29, 2011 09:10 PM Thanks for your comments. It is interesting to see that that the last message from her was sent at 4:16 am. I don't know whether she is the UK or still in China. Don't know whether they were trying to waste our time.

Little bit worried as they have our address. Hope it ends there with them. I will be contacting a major auction house about item
  • blue_monkey! Thanks for your concerns. This was posted on both forums, firstly because this deals with financial and see

We have received legal advice, as mentioned when I spoken to the my friend, a practising barrister, whom told me to show complete caution. We never had problem with Chinese buyers before (although these were posted to China), which made us too trusting until now. I We are in the process of contacting a major auction houses, and were with provincial ones who have specialist Asian art sales. They only hold the specialist ones in May and November, a long wait. We don't even know whether they would want to consign it back in March anywhere.

The recent days have genuinely left us completely shaken, and at the moment we don't need the stress, due to serious family ill health etc. It is not amusing at the moment. I wished also we took advice earlier
  • Posted on both forums in trying to get as much advice as possible or whether anyone had a similar experience.
