No! I waited a month before we were going to cancel the transaction, as there was quite a lot of communication regarding delivery cost, then on the 02/05/2011 the buyer wrote he was planning to come to the UK at the end of May (delayed apparently due to receiving a Visa), but he didn't say specifically for this. They told us that he wanted the teapot badly. In a message today she stated her boss set her heart on it. I thought he was genuine, hope I haven't been too trusting (because of the thought that some Chinese citizens were becoming wealthier and of his reputed background).

Haven't you ever received e-mails from people pretending to be of a reputed background, and they want to put money into your account?? Don't take any notice of what you are told via e-mail.

Follow the advice of your lawyer friend. If the buyer isn't interested, then it's obviously some sort of scam. As a worst case scenario you could end up outside the tube station, minus the teapot, and with a knife in your gut.

    £20,000
    public place
    London Underground

find a London underground station near a branch of your bank and meet her there.

    Why??

If as someone else pointed out, they have come all the way from China, then another 70 miles isn't going to be an issue. Also there is the risk of damage during the 70 mile trip to London.

because if they're saying that they'll only meet in a public place outside a London tube station then 70 miles is worth travelling for 20k if you can get them to meet in a bank, then you can have it checked and deposited straight into your account.

If they want it enough to travel from China, they will travel another 70 miles.

Personally I think they are in London anyway, and not China.

Some people wouldn't bat an eyelid about commiting a street robery for a £20K item. So the advantage for them would be that the OP wouldn't be able to park outside the bank, and it would be an easy getaway in London.

The buyer should stick to their guns.

I think the same as you about being in London and a busy tube station is an easy get away when you grab it to inspect it... Girl runs and two accomplices block the OP to slow them down.

So suggesting doing the transaction in a bank isn't going to work well for them as they won't be able to grab and run as easy. The OP might not be able to park outside; but it's a tea pot so not too big that it can't be put in a bag. You also wouldn't want to invite them to your house.

Would you want to put a £20K teapot in a bag?

I think I would want to put it in a very strong box, with loads of protection. So all they would have to do is look out for someone approaching the bank with a large box.

Much better to meet them at the OP's local bank.
  • After reading these posts we are now scared. The buyer has our home address as it would have been given to them on ebay when they purchased the item. Wished we had become suspicious earlier and not until she mentioned the underground station.

You should be quite safe if you just follow your lawyer friend's advice.
