Fag burn on my new and unused dress

Hi all, I'm sure I know the answer to this but figured it's worth asking anyway.
I won a dress on eBay described as new and unused, and bidded accordingly. The dress has arrived, and although it still has the tags on it there is a fag burn hole right on the front of it. It's bright white so you can't miss it, and I can't fix or hide it.
I've looked at the ad again in case I'm going mad and it states new and unused with tags on, and I can't see the burn in the images. The dress also smells strongly of perfume so it seems likely to me that the seller has worn it with the tags on and it got damaged.
I received plenty of polite correspondence from the seller so it's come as a bit of a surprise to receive it in this condition. I'm going to insist on a refund but what I want to know is if there is any way of me getting the return postage paid for as it seems utterly unfair that I have to pay to return a used damaged dress when I was expecting something new in pristine condition (I believe that's just the way eBay works though!!)

You cannot force a seller to repay your return costs but all decent sellers will. Just ask for a return (and remember tracking just in case!) and also ask seperately for the return postage to be refunded once you provide a receipt for it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. If it's a private seller, unless the seller offers to pay for the return p&p unfortunately you will need to return it at your cost. If a business seller then it will depend on what's in their return policy.
Maybe the seller will be decent about it, if you offer to photograph the damage & email the picture.0 -
Ebay don't enforce it, very annoying, if your seller is a good egg they will refund.
I'm in the same boat except it will cost me £25 to return my itemwhich i know i won't get back
Send them a message explaining you're not happy, or pull their number and give them a phone - i find sellers often back down when they can't hide behind email0 -

its positively huge and heavy, i paid the seller £20 and they packed it really shoddily so proper packing will bring it up.0

Thanks all, I thought that was the case. If it only cost me a couple of quid I wouldn't bother, but it is still worth me returning it. pug_in_a_bed that's terrible, I'll only be paying £2.50 or there abouts so that totally puts it into perspective!!0

Sigh, the seller has insisted the dress is unworn, they checked it before sending and that no one smokes in their house so it wasn't them that did it
I hate being accused of lying, I love the dress- I wouldn't dream of damaging it just to try it on!!
They have mostly good feedback too but there is one negative feedback from a buyer saying the clothes were sweaty and ripped so hopefully that will work in my favour now I have had to open a dispute.
Maybe the postman opened my parcel, put the dress on and clumsily backed into someone smoking before dropping it off at my house?? :rotfl:0 -

How huge & heavy? Have you checked into couriers, they're generally around the £9 mark for 30kgish depending on the size.
There's a thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3326070
the buyer got ebay to pay the return costs, so it may be worth finding the original thread, or contacting the OP to see how she managed it.0 -
