I think I recently read that smart meters were expected by 2018, but I'm also pretty sure that these dates are just being bandied around, with no real decision on what a smart meter is or will do, let alone when we'll get them.
Mart.
Evening, this may tell you something RE: Smart Meters:rotfl:

This is to reduce it:

It is wonderful how authentic pseudo science can be made to sound.
It always amazes me how speakers tell scare stories about mobile masts being allowed to be located anywhere without permission, when in reality what you want is for these things to be sited absolutely everywhere - including on your kids school - to keep the handset power down to a minimum. The other stupidity is to talk about 'radiation' when they mean 'Radio waves'.4kWp, Panels: 16 Hyundai HIS250MG, Inverter: SMA Sunny Boy 4000TLLocation: Bedford, Roof: South East facing, 20 degree pitch20kWh Pylontech US5000 batteries, Lux AC inverter,Skoda Enyaq iV80, TADO Central Heating control0 -

Hmmm, guess, time will tell. I don't think smoking is that bad for you either, but each to his own. Trouble is people only believe what they want in the long run. :rotfl:2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.

How about asbestos - to take another example of something that was "safe".
Just how dangerous has it become?
I would suggest that "radiation" is more accurate a term as it is all part of a spectrum.
Does Radio still sound so reassuring if we call it Radioactive?
As someone someone used to train commute listening to VHF radio on a "Walkman"; I was only too well aware of the surrounding cell phones tuning in to the next cell phone tower and when I arrived at the City the electronic noise was deafening and made the reception of the radio almost impossible.0 -

... and we've got a pretty amazing racehorse in the field behind at the moment, makes quite a difference from the old nags, sheep, wheat, corn, linseed etc .... can hardly get a mobile signal at all in most of the house and the sky doesn't glow orange at night.
I find that in these circumstances the best method of telephonic communication is landline and would have thought that the best solution would be to concentrate on powerline communication technologies, but although the design requirements for UK smartmetering recognise that there is a requirement for a modular communications interface there seems to be a complete misunderstanding of rural affairs with a concentration on an urban rollout and the issue of changing between mobile networks for data collection ..... info here (http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/consultations/smart-meter-imp-prospectus/225-smart-metering-imp-programme-design.pdf) .........
Anyway, looking at the document it would seem that the UK specs will be based on simply establishing a connection, downloading the data and then sleeping until the next transmission time, so the radiation (radio wave) concerns raised in the recent link don't really apply as the unit will be in sleep mode for the majority of the time as opposed to being a cell relay station on full power transmission as the YT video described in such a display of sensationalism in order to gain support against the technology being implemented ... I've currently got 2 smartphones (even if there's hardly any signal), 2 Wifi laptops, 2 DECT phones, a couple of bluetooth devices and a Wifi smartTV all transmitting & receiving within a couple of meters of where I'm sitting .... I wonder which I would need to be more worried about, all of this kit around me which is filling the room with radiation (R/F) almost all of the time, or an electricity meter which is about 10 meters away and through a couple of thick walls which would likely be transmitting for no more than a few of minutes per day ...

Having been unable to sell/give me Solar Panels HomeSun are still hot on my trail. I'm now getting emails re " Free " insulation for my loft and walls. Now it seems to me that if I was thinking about SP I would obviously have made my house as efficient as possible already. Which I have done. Any ( polite ) suggestions as to what I can tell them to get them off my back AGAIN will be welcome.0

I have just completed my first year of panel ownaship.
Despite this year having the worst weather for 100 years; I made £1750 on FIT payments and £250 on saved electricity payments. These payments represent a return on investment (£11,000) of 18%17 Sharp Panels. of 230 watts (3.91 KW)

So that's (a rounded ?) 4000kWh of generation with an estimated 50% being self consumed (valued at 12p/kWh) ??
