I purchased a new flat over 4 years and as such have also been paying maintenance charges each year.
I have now received a letter from the management company that they have been instructed by George Wimpey to collect the ground rent from 2007 onwards.
Are they legally entitled to do this? Is there a maximum period time before I do not have to pay this?
I believed that the charge I was paying each year included this.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

This question is probably best asked on The House Buying, Renting & Selling Board.0

I'm of the understanding that they have 6 years to bill you for services provided. Do you have any paperwork that backs up your thought that you were paying this on an ongoing basis?0

Hi Steve
I'll move your query across to the House buying, Renting and Selling board for the experts there to answer.

Service Charge and ground rent are different things and it's entirely likely that they go to separate companies.
They can chase you for six years and they do not have to have biled you at the time for it to have been due. It just is.
The answer is probably that you need to pay up. A lot of freeholders are lax in chasing ground rents every year because they aren't worth a lot (guilty as charged).Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
