Tesco home delivery is rubbish

I have seen various threads on this and other forums about online shopping. It seems to be dependent on the area you are living as to which supermarket is best. Try asking around your neighbourhood and find out who other people get their food shopping delivered by.

Tesco's went through a really bad patch here a couple of years ago with overcharging, items missing, and rotten fruit-in my case peaches so mouldy I could smell them from three foot away. Then they opened a large warehouse and stopped picking the online shopping in the local stores. The service is now excellent with most products available and few substitutes. The quality of the fruit and veg has also improved. We can book slots on some days for as low as £3 with both Tuesday and Wednesday being the cheaper days.

My local store regularly removes value items from their shelves replacing them with more expensive items. I have an (unproven) suspicion that this tends to happen on Fri, Sat Sun, perhaps to catch people with higher income? I have proved that some prices increase on a Friday to be reduced again the next Monday. Staff say they're not allowed to comment on prices with one member of staff saying she wouldn't shop there as "they're crooks" - her words!

Tried Sainsbury's for the first time this week and had 6 subs (one being a 4 pack of cheesecake expiring on that day and not highlighted), a 2.5kg bag of potatoes expiring on that day and the majority of perishables with dates in the next 2 to 3 days. No pricematch either.

Back to Tesco I go as I rarely get more than 2 subs (pricematched if dearer) and the dates are normally excellent.

I found Ocado quality excellent but a bit on the expensive side and I haven't tried Asda yet.

I have always praised Ocado on this forum but we have stopped shopping with them as we were experiencing packing problems week after week with food being squashed, broken, leaking etc.

Read the other week that Ocado actually cannot cope with customer demand so are probably not bothered if they lose some customers - they more or less said this. I also suspect they are more keen to hold on to customers in the south which is nearer their distribution warehouse.

If you shop at Tesco and use a clubcard, you should find all your previous purchases are in your favourites when you shop online provided you have linked that clubcard to it. I used to have a similar problem in that I shopped near work in a huge Extra store, but our home delivery came from a much smaller rural store (our city doesn't yet have a Tesco other than little convenience ones - no Asda either although we do have 2 big Stainsbugs which I loathe!). I used to run down the favourites and order everything I wanted from there and then go searching for other stuff.

For actual shopping in person from home we've tended to go to the nearest Asda 8 miles away so having got fed up with Tesco high delivery costs etc, I had a play on mysupermarket.co.uk where you put in your shopping order and it will tell you which of the stores that deliver to your house is cheapest. Asda always comes out £10 cheaper on a £60 shop so we've been using them for the last few weeks - plus some of their delivery slots are as cheap as £3 (e.g. evenings). I know there have been some bad comments about Asda on here and we've only been using them a couple of weeks but so far so good.

i take you have tried searching for ketchup, bbq sauces, chips then filter by area as i can see chips by tesco and tesco own products

Yep, I tried searching. No BBQ sauces came up, various ketchups did, but only half of what they have on the shelves. The only Tesco chips that came up were the Tesco Finest. I wanted the Value ones.
  • I did my shopping from ASDA like I said I would. Their website had loads of stuff and took me a while to wade through the site. I finally found everything that I was looking. I chose the £2.50 6hr delivery slot, instead of any of the £5 2hr slots.

The driver rang me and said that he was on his way. There were no substitutions, but the driver did say that I nearly didn't get most of my shopping along with many other shoppers. Apparently the stores fridges broke down for a while forcing them to dispose of a lot of their goods, but managed to get them repaired and restocked in time.

However, I have one problem with ASDA delivery. Their minimum £25 delivery order. Because I live alone, and tend to stock up on things that take me a while to go through (tins, frozen goods, that sort of thing), there are times when I don't need that much, and thus sometimes don't spend more than £20. There's no minimum charge for Tesco.

It's exactly the same for me. Why not join forces with an elderly neighbour and do both of you a favour?

    Because it's not possible.
