can you not phone them back and discover what is going on? did they leave you a forwarding telephone number?? Maybe they have looked into your case in detail and have decided that you can qualify for support but only when you have had a medical. Sorry if thats not much help. You prob need to phone your local jobcentre plus office. The phone number that i always use is 0845 600 3115. But, i dont know if it will be different for you .

when you get through to them, and if you have to go in and see them, ask for all information they give you to be put in writing and sent to your address.

    Who can get Income Support

It's for people who all the following apply to:
    • are between age 16 and the age they can get Pension Credit
    • have a low income
    • work less than 16 hours a week
    • aren't in full-time study (but there are some exceptions)
    • don't get Jobseeker's Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance
    • don't have savings above £16,000
    • live in Great Britain
You may get Income Support if you are one of the following:
    • a lone parent
    • on parental or paternity leave
    • a carer
    • a refugee learning English who arrived less than a year ago

Sorry, I was only going by what you put?

Does it mean that you can't claim on our own merit but haveto be considered as part of the total ousehold income/hours worked?
It's hard to explain I will try my best.

Assuming the OP is a paid carer who get's carer's allowance which she can do in her own right, if the disabled child get's middle/high rate care. This would then lead onto a carer premium within IS/IBJSA/IRESA but as these benefits are means tested she won't qualify for this as the household income is in excess.

I thought Id applied for ESA back in january, but this lady is saying
Income support and says I have money held there @£67.50 a week.
I am a carer to my disabled son. Is this why they contacted me ?
Can you clarify which benefits it is that you actually get at this minute in time?
Are you in receipt of carer's allowance, and you are trying to claim ESA aswell?

  • I get carers allowance. I was told back in january to apply for ESA because my mri results.

They said they would phone me back yesturday , but no phone call yet ?

thanks for the help. I will let you know the outcome.
    Just seems strange.
  • update: they phoned me back today. The lady said they are paying my National insurance for my pension protection ?

and after going through all my details ,she told me that I should get a low rate of I.S £28 for being a carer , as a top up ?
she encouraged me to phone another number about this.

So I phoned the number to ask some questions about if this is true and they said I would need to apply to find out if I qualify , so they started asking me a million questions there and then .
Then told me they would let me know.

I dont know why, but I feel really worried about all this ,
why do I feel so uncomfortable ?

    just seems so stressful.:(

Income Support is assessed on the joint income of both partners. If you had been working prior to your illness you may qualify for contributions based ESA, for your husbands situation does not count. If you earn currently less than £100 net (net in this case is gross -tax - NI -1/2 of pension contributions paid by you) you can keep the Carers Allowance even when working.
If your son is disabled and your husband on low wage check out Wprking Tax Credit and/or Rent and Council Tax benefit.

Oops forgot the child care element in the "net for Carers Allowance formula" above. If you have to pay for child care while working that is also knocked off the gross income.
