I guess we must vote with our feet according to our own principles. If you are happy with where you shop - carry on, but if not do something about it. I'm happier buying meat from our local butchers as it is locally produced and states which farm its from - also local, I get more bargains there than I do at the supermarket. I'm lucky that I have the choice to choose, some town centres have become ghost towns due to big edge/out of town shopping centres, but as much as people moan about the stores they are obviously making pots of money and if just one or two people complain they don't care. the manager of the local tesco's told one elderly lady who had shopped there for years to go somewhere else, when she told him (nicely) that the things she came in regularly for were often out of stock. When she put it to him that as the manager he should encourage his customers to stay , he said why, even my wife doesn't shop here. That brought home to me about customer loyalty -its only to the £'s in your purse - not you. Its not just tesco's either, in fact the people on the shop floor are a lot nicer and more customer friendly than a lot of the 'higher up' staff, but its them that get the brunt of the customers irritatation. I saw one woman have a go at the girl on the checkout because she'd had problems with the stores credit card.0

PS has anyone received the tesco vouchers I just got in the post - £39 worth, the first one is £9 off a £60 spend and the other five are £6 off a £60 spend. Is this because I have voted with my feet and don't go there very much or has everyone got them?0

Ordered some oranges at 19p each and expected them to be a bit bigger than a satsuma but alas, maybe our eyesight is failing us.
Have noticed few price changes too. Their value apple juice used to be 39p now up to 45p conveniently the same price of the value orange juice.
We always notice fresh veg never lasts very long so best to get it from fruit and veg shops.
:undecided
re fruit and veg ,when you order on line you are in control of the weight / size of the items
you can put a "note" as to whether you require small / large carrots eg and the total weight of them too if you wish0 -
Of course, the obvious answer is, don't shop at Tesco's. They pay their directors salaries well in excess of their market value (I.e. the same as BP directors, except BP is the largest UK company) whilst paying their staff rock bottom wages.
Sometimes its not just about price.
We can ALL do something about chiselling companies!!!

I also buy fruit and veg from out local shop )loads cheaper than supermarkets (e.g. large aubergines, 2 for a £1) and all our meat from our local butchers (Nice dry cure bacon and home made sausages).
I'm not in some leafy country village but in a South Manchester suburb. You just have to get out there and support your local shops before they disappear.
PS the "banter" in the local shops is better too!!

Just thought I would point out a few things that I have noticed in our local Tescos:
PG Tips: Its cheaper to buy 2 boxes of 80 tea bags that 1 box of 160. Its also 80p cheaper to buy 3 boxes of 80 tea bags rather than 1 box of 240!
Mince beef (refridgerated not frozen): Its also cheaper to buy multiples of the 500g containers rather than the bigger ones AND the normal 500g mince is only 3p more expensive than the Value equivalent.0 -
It really bugs me when I have to buy the smaller sizes and three lots of packaging instead of the bigger (usually economy) pack being cheaper and one lot of packaging.
I have found that when i'm using the local shops my recycling bin has hardly anything in it as there is no packaging to recycle!0 -
I buy a lot of cans of pop (sugar free of course!).
Tescos often have offers on the shrink-wrapped packs of 6. However, on two or three occasions in the last few months I've noticed a sneaky ploy.
Tescos start off with a 2 for the price of 1 offer (usually, say, £2.19 for a pack of 6). Then, they change the offer to 2 for £3 without a gap in the offers. This means that anyone who is shopping and picked up on the original offer and who glances at the shelf and sees the yellow offer labels there probably still tink it is the same offer as previous weeks, but end up paying 81p more.0 -
Justamum wrote:Riblet - fruit and veg would be much cheaper if farmers didn't have a huge proportion of their produce rejected because it wasn't pretty enough. So in reality supermarkets are screwing the supplier because all their hard work counts for nothing. Supermarkets demand a high level of perfection in shape and size - but flavour seems to be not an issue for them. Personally I would prefer to buy food that actually has some flavour. I couldn't care less if it's not a uniform shape - it's not entering a beauty contest is it?
Sainsbury's Basic range includs misshapen/too small/too large fruit and veg. Much better value and () better taste. I use the cooking apples, eating apples, pears, carrots and onions - not tried the potatoes yet.

I've just started buying Sainsbury's basic range - i don't go out of my way as they are too far to make it worthwhile, I've found it quite good, their sweet and sour sauce if you want to keep a few jars of things if you are in a hurry is really nice and only about 29p.
The only thing I hate about Sainsbury's is that bloke on their adverts who cannot seem to keep his face more than 3 inches from the food (therefore maximising his on screen time as they can't manage to film the food without him looming behind it). - Sorry rant over - I expect to be stoned by fans of his!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0
