I like real ale and lager. Real ale doesn't have a superiority over good lager; they're both really enjoyable if they have the "ooooohhh" factor.

Sadly, about 80% of what pubs serve and call "real ale" is ditchwater.

London Pride is one of the best bottled beers around IMO. I might go and buy some now.

I go for lager during a scorcher in the summer or when I need a quick hit of beer refreshment.

I can't say I agree about the "80% of pubs" stuff. I don't find it too hard to find decent bitterr in pubs. It all depends on what pubs you go to and what your area is like. The modern chain bars don't cater for real ale. If the pub sells good food and is in a good location then good real ale is usually available there, but it has to come from a distinctive hand drawn pump and not from a keg tap like disgusting stuff such as John Smiths or Boddingtons.

Discover real ale! It's our national drink and not a poor interpretation of a lager import.

None of your pasteurised lager rubbish that mostly tastes the same with real ale. Almost every real ale tastes different from each other and has loads more character. Find one you like and you'll be converted.

London Pride's a good one. It's available on draught in lots of pubs and also from supermarkets in bottles and cans.

I agree, much tastier than the imported stuff. Shame there are never really any good deals on real ale though. Best bet is to go to Majestic Wine Warehouse and buy a big box of them.

Well it's obviouslly not 0% of pubs that serve bad beer then. I wasn't claiming that I'd never found good beer in a pub, but I was pointing out that a lot of pubs serve bad beer.

Anyway, if you're from Stroud in Gloucestershire shouldn't there be no end of decent pubs round that way with good bitter?

Yes, but that's not the point I was making.
If you carefully chose your pubs then you can enjoy good beer. But there are many more pubs with bad beer. Hence my claim that a significant proportion have bad beer.

If someone who knows nothing about beer and usually drinks, say, Stella decided to try some "real ale" and ended up with the mank that many pubs sell, then they're going to decide that real ale is not nice.

Booths is the place to go (Northern based supermarket, similar to Waitrose) - they've had a long term deal on whereby they sell their Top 10 at 99p each (500ml bottles) - its like a grown-up's pick'n'mix... many of the males in my family will be getting a beer hamper this Christmas :D

Booths tend to pride themselves on their Beer offering, quite rightly too IMO
  • If there's one advantage of working in a brewery it's I don't need to buy beer from the supermarket, and don't have to buy much from work anyway cos a free allowance per month!!

    Happy days eh???

As long as you don't work at Carling. You did say "brewery" rather than "processing plant" though.

Sainsbury's are doing Hobgoblin in four packs for that real beer xmas day feet up feeling.
The Hobgoblin pub in Oxford town centre is a must if your there the choice is bewildering.

Just got me some of the large Stella cans (8 packs). There were a few left but mysteriously no price was displayed!! They were directly beneath the usual large 4 packs (£5-00)!!!

Funny how they tuck the bargins away isnt it?!
