That is nothing, I had a work acquaintance who talked about the plans for her wedding constantly for 18 months, boring me to death with details and costs- £20K. (This was back in 1995). 6 months before the wedding she started an affair with a work colleague- she confided that she did n't really love her husband to be but wanted to go ahead with her dream WEDDING.

2 months after the wedding she split up with her new husband- surprise surprise her lover ran mile. He obviously thought he was safe having an affair with a bridezilla as she would not want him to commit.

IMHO the problem here is people fail to to differentiate between a marriage and a wedding. Come on men grow a pair- when you ask for the hand of a woman you are asking for a marriage not a wedding. The wedding part should only take a day maximum and a week to plan. The marriage should last for the rest of your life not the other way round.

Break down the wedding budget as to what you are actually looking to get, and then work out how much it will cost.

In my experience, if you give yourselves a budget of '£15k' you will spend £15k, even if you don't own it. If you budget the actual cost of what you want, without any preconceptions, then you can figure out the overall cost and look at each area individually to whittle them down.

You don't need to have an open bar, you don't need the posh hotel for days before the wedding, you don't need to spend quite as much on a dress (by the way, wedding dresses are a complete racket, I found which company in china was making the designer dress my wife wanted and bought it for $180 USD + importing costs directly from the factory rather than the £1800 that the uk retailer wanted us to spend).

Anyway, for god's sakes, don't go and get yourself into thousands of pounds worth of debt.

Because of a couple of emergencies which cropped up, I ended up having to put about £300 on a credit card. Not nice, but if that's the worst debt that I incurred as a result of a white wedding at a thousand year old church with a 3 course meal at the best hotel in the city for 50+ people then I think I did ok.

Don't spend money you don't have on a wedding!
Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.

    ever met a woman?

I've never met a good, decent and sensible woman who'd want sixteen grand of hideous debt round her neck for a silly wedding....must be moving in the wrong circles I guess.

All women like nice things but this plan has financial blackhole written all over it.

I understand exactly what you mean and I nearly posted this the other day but didn't.

I had an ex in the 90's (I was with her for about 4 years) whose wedding plans had obviously started in childhood and were a list you wouldn't believe. I'd been told them a few times over the years we were together, each time having to feign interest. Her plans for the big day even began with being proposed to in New York.

And no-where other than New York.

I'd be surprised if even now she realised how stupid it sounds. And I'm very happy to be rid :)

Absolutely! Another friend of mine LOVES nice things, so was over the moon when she found her dream £2k wedding dress on ebay for less than £150... A dream wedding doesn't have to cost the earth and doesn't even have to look "budget" if you just shop smart!

The most expensive wedding I ever went to cost in excess of £100k. My friend married the son of a famous TV presenter. Her wedding dress and evening dresses alone cost £15k. The marriage was over within 3 months.... :(

Yep, nothing causes bigger arguments than cash and sex, when you've tied the knot, they money disagreements take over.......

I can only imagine that I'm old fashoined, but, the horror of such a huge ridiculous debt hanging over me for something which can be done with more taste and style for a fraction of the price make me shudder to my core.

Before anyone tells me that I'm just being negative and should mind my own business....blow me :rotfl:
