I really don't think I'd have attended a 10 week course led by a man to promote them.

Well, you wouldn't be able to attend anyway - as it's being held in his head.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Goodness me there are some cynical hard nosed types on this thread!

I have often spoken about my community work, and have presented a course on healthy eating for the obese . This is just an extension of that in many ways because I have the knowledge and skills needed.

Mrs B (the ex midwife) has over 60 years of experience working with young mothers (incredible lady who will be 80 next month , and will be providing the professional element to the course.

Don't know who the OP is or if this is a wind up...

but the fact that you are asking on here for information suggests that you are not the correct person to hold these courses anyhow. Find someone who is passionate and knowledgeable on the subject to take them instead.

As this has nothing to do with saving money, it should be moved to the Arms where Tod can benefit from a wide range of experiences and views. The wisdom of crowds should be taken advantage of, eh Tod?

Whether this thread is a wind-up or not, some of it is quite believable. I was a Parish Councillor for a few years, in a very small parish. There was next to no money to go around so if somebody were to hand over a lump of cash, even with ridiculous strings attached, then it would have been taken very seriously. Pretty much everything was done on a voluntary basis and it was extremely difficult to find many "volunteers" due to the huge levels of apathy and disinterest in the village - the same handful of people did everything. Yes, there were local health visitors at the nearest GP surgery but, to put it in the most charitable light, they were extremely over-worked and would not have the time to spare for this type of project. There were a number of young families in the village, despite the difficulties therein: I'm sure some sort of local baby group would have been welcome.

The main problem I see, as previously mentioned, is that no expectant or recent mothers are going to sign up to a fixed weekly group and actually see it through. It should be a weekly drop-in session, run for the 10 weeks specified. Tbh, over my years' service, I've had to duck out of parish meetings halfway through due to pregnancy nausea and I've had to miss meetings due to being too sleep-deprived to function. And those were parish meetings, which were significantly more important than a "social" group. Furthermore, I agree with the other posters that a woman should host the group. If "Mrs B" is unable to do so, then find another female volunteer - however difficult that may be - your Parish Church Council or local WI branch or any other local group will be able to provide. (In my experience, it is quite often the same people so it makes little difference which group you approach!!)

On a side note, as for the OP's rather blunt statements about breastfeeding, I have heard women say the same things too. Possibly they are more palatable coming from a woman as opposed to a man. And, for the OP's benefit, many people may agree with the sentiment but I strongly suggest you find a different way of phrasing it. Moms who don't have female relatives nearby or the time/money to consult a lactation consultant may be delighted to have kindly ol' Mrs B check their baby's latch position and provide some tips from her wealth of experience. They are *not* going to take kindly to being told they are too lazy to feed their baby correctly. There is a world of difference in the two approaches.

It is about saving money, to the extent that Parish Councils rarely have enough. You have to work every penny until it squeaks. :p Whatever the OP can do/provide for free will help maximise his budget and save his council a few more pence.

I rather suspect the Parish Council exists in Tod's head, and the logistics in his imagination.

Possibly. ;) But I always like to respond seriously because the information may be useful to somebody else. I know I sometimes search the forums for old threads.

    Hi,

I haven't read all your replies - I'll come back later and have a propper read - but in the mean time, I saw someone metion La Leche League earlier and I second that. Why not invite some experienced Mum's from La Leche League to talk about their experiences and offer info etc.

I saw someone question whether you'd be the right person to give info and wondered if your job would be more to co-ordinate the seesions unless you do have the right experience etc!?

I do think some women are prone to overcomplicating breast feeding , you have to remember bigmomma, that people have been doing this for millions of years. Its not rocket science.

It will be a combination of carrot and stick

In this matter, if you don't have breasts then your opinion doesn't count, sorry!

I had so many helpful pointers from other mums, midwives and health visitors. There's nothing you coud bring to the table unless you have breastfed a baby yourself or been intensively trained in the ins and outs of breastfeeding.
