Touch wood my two have never had them.
My hairdresser told me about putting a couple of drops of tea tree oil in shampoo, but she did also say they can become immune to this.
What I've found that seems to work is Dr Johnsons repellent head lice shampoo and I comb through once a week with a nitty gritty comb to check.

My mum has always sworn by Avon Techniques Leave in Conditioner (I think thats what its still called). It stays on the hair and means the nits cant lay eggs so easier to get rid of them if your child does get them. We used to use it all the time growing up. great stuff and its nice on the hair and smells good too:j0

However, for some reason my 8 year old ds has NEVER had them. He has very fine hair - like baby hair and still has cradle cap so whether this deters the nits, I don't know! ..... So, touchwood, nits hasn't been a problem for us in the last few years, however worms on the other hand...:eek:
Cradle cap is dried oils from the scalp.. a good scrubbing with proper adult shampoo shifts it in a few washes usually.. the HV recommended head and shoulders.. babies get it because the mums hormones in their bloodstream increase the oily secretions and new mums are too scared to rub the babies head hard enough to get it clean.. but as it coats the scalp the bugs can't feed so wouldn't be very happy.
Worms.. vermox... fabulous stuff...
Nitty gritty comb.. and if the hedrin isn't working call in the big guns.. prioderm.. stinks to high heaven works almost on contact and even deters them for a few days. I found hedrin to be not much use.. full marks was probably the best after prioderm but the latter is solvent/oil based so I try not to use it too often due to skin conditions.
Nitty gritty comb can be got on the minor ailments at the chemist so free for children
I have 6 girls with thick frizzy waist length hair and the ones at primary are constantly hopping.. I do them all at the same time and they just never seem to go.. the boys get a number 2.. It became less of a problem at high school thank goodness!!! Bizarrely I never get them... which is fortunateLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
When my 3 girls were younger, all had long hair, it was a nightmare and very time consuming to put the conditioner on, comb through and then wash off again.
I used a leave in conditioner from body shop, can't remember the name but I use to but that on, sit them in front of a video, and comb and wipe with tissues. Definitely section off the hair. Repeated every couple of days until all gone.
To safe guard repeat weekly.2013

Nitty Gritty comb recommended from me too. I have shoulder length hair, so on the couple of occasions I have found them on DS I do myself too. Someone recently suggested the blue listerine mouthwash (!) as a final rinse has kept them off her kids for several years now.The IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

I've found the plastic ones only get the big bugs out, Can I recommend a Nitty Gritty comb. My children have all been infested at some point since starting school, and these combs while expensive (about £10) last forever (they sell them in Boots), they've got special spiral prongs and get the eggs out, which is the main thing. My lot now get a whizz through with it every night just in case...i'm itching now too...
Totally agree - get the Nitty Gritty. I had a whole summer ruined for me and dd one year trying other methods. When we got them again the next summer we were in despair but one go through with the nitty gritty fixed it eggs and all. We combed through once a week for acouple more times in case but found nothing. I almost feel that the nitty gritty should be handed out in schools - compared to everything it is just amazing. if you arent planning going anywhere then wash your hair and pour olive oil through- it really loosens up the eggs, when your hair and sons is dry just keep combing through and leave on overnight and repeat tommorrow.
its great for your hair anyway so you get a good condition too:o
I know it looks repulsive but its the oils the best ive found if you have long hair as the eggs dont come out normally by the time you pull from top to bottom and can break off your hair-olive oil is great for loosening the eggs and the lice cant lay anymore either on the grease.
if you want something similar for girls with long hair i used to use the monoi oil from yves rocher, its coconut oil based but smells lovely, you can leave it in if you like when your daughters go to school and just tightly plait the hair , it keeps nits at bay but smells wonderfull-unlike neem etc***MSE...My.Special.Escape***0 -
Poor you my one fear
I use vosene on my DD and she has never got them, even when they had a huge break out in her class she was one of 5 who didnt get them.
I also comb her hair through very regular incase so i can catch it before they get bad if she does come home with anything.
Don`t forget to let his teacher know, they can then remind other parents via letter.
Lots of conditioner and a nit comb is best - tea tree as they hate it! Try and get someone to go through your hair for you as it can be hard especially if you have long/fizzy hair.
My nephew got them aged 7 and we had to shave his hair off to a no1 to get rid of them in the end as it was impossible.DebtFree FEB 2010!Slight blip in 2013 - Debtfree Aug 2014 :j
