Do you dye your hair? I had the gits for 2 years. Tried EVERY product known to man. Then mum said let's see what dyeing the hair does. As we washed the colour out you could see them dropping out. So try that if you do dye your hair.

I have long hair and have had them twice eek. This is what I do
Get a nitty gritty comb, wad of tissue and cheap conditioner. I smother my hair in conditioner and then section it off with clips. It's best to do it like this so you know exactly which bits of your hair you have done so you don't miss any of the little beasts.
The conditioner makes them slippy and hence easier to remove. When you have gone through a strand of hair wipe on tissue to ensure the comb is clear for your next strand.
Repeat morning and evening (time consuming I know) once you have got the live ones out at least they can't lay anymore eggs and you are just removing remaining eggs. Do this at least for 3 days!
Hope this helps - my girls have had it too and it's awful! Good luck!

I recommend vosene 3 in 1 shampoo. My daughter has not had nits for 3 years since I started using it.They also do a spray with teatree oil. I also put her hair up in a bun for school. My boys always had their hair cropped [a number 2] when they were younger. We have only had 4 cases of headlice between the 3 children in 17 years.

Dyeing your hair does kill them. All at once, so no repeat treatments. And it's less faff than hedrin :rotfl:

My children passed them on to me quite recently and I found the nit lotion didn't work, we did the tea tree thing in the end and got them all :D

My middle daughter was always catching them from someone at school, it was really bugging me as in the holidays we'd get rid of them and then when she went back to school she ended up with them again. They were always sending letters out about nits.

I had a nitty gritty comb and used lots of conditioner and in the end I used Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner, we all caught them (except OH) so I had to do 3 kids and myself, it was a nightmare.

Luckily (touch wood) the last time they sent a letter out I checked her hair and she didn't have them so hopefully they don't like her anymore. I had visions of her having nits for the rest of her primary school life and she's only 5.

Fingers crossed we don't get them again.

When I was a kid I had nits twice, the nit nurse used to come round and check your hair and if you had nits you got sent home, my Nan lived with us at the time and I remember sitting there for ages while she went through my hair picking everything out.

When I said to the nurse about it in the beginning she said that even if they see nits on a childs head they can't do anything so it's bound to spread around, they really are gross things especially the very big ones.

One of the other mums in another Year 1 class said she buys something from the chemist, it's like a spray that you spray in and leave and her daughter has not had them since.

If the Hedrin isn't killing them, try a different one. They get resistant to the treatments so it's best to use different ones in rotaion. Your local pharmacy might know which one is working at the moment.

Are the 'eggs' you're trying to emove the little white bits a centimetre or so down the shaft? These are actually empty egg cases and do not need to be removed, they'll just drop off eventually. The actual eggs are against the scalp.

I consider myself an expert on this one having gone through an infestation that lasted 6 months, between school, day care adn the two kids.

Tried eveything, combing every night, all products - the little !!!!!!s kept coming back. Eventually we got the Hedrin, having tried all the others which were next to useless.

AMAZING stuff. The trick is, put on half a bottle of Hedrin - it actually drowns them, and is not an insecticide like the others. To make double sure, wrap the hair in clingfilm and cover with a swimming cap. When you take these off the next morning, all the creatures will be dead in the clingfilm - there's no need even to comb!

    Good luck...

I swear by the nitty gritty comb too (sometimes they are half price in sainsbury's) , also avon kids detangler spray seems to have an anti effect for mine, we were totally plagued by them at one point (I have 3 girls with long thick slightly wavy hair! 3 boys were not so bad) but that seemed to really help by chance.

My eldest ds used to have nits regularly and I remember discovering them on New Year's Eve in 1999 just as I was about to go out (he was just 3 at the time) and we were both riddled!! He can still remember me half drowning him under the shower as I was desperately trying to shampoo the solution into his hair!!! It ruined my night as I wouldn't let anyone near me when it struck midnight 2000! However, for some reason my 8 year old ds has NEVER had them. He has very fine hair - like baby hair and still has cradle cap so whether this deters the nits, I don't know! I found that blowdrying and straightening my hair stopped me catching nits - I think it must be the heat that does it. So, touchwood, nits hasn't been a problem for us in the last few years, however worms on the other hand...:eek:
