i'd agree that material isnt so important - trav is very popular do to its light colour and in a room with velux and hence little natural light stick to light stone or stone effect tiles - they have a knack of enhancing natural light.

Size wise, dont go very small on the wall - as keystone says too small on the walls and large on the floor wont look right. too small can look fussy in a smaller room, it doesnt make the room look bigger!

If the bathroom is narrow then square floor tiles can be placed at a diagonal to make it more appealing to the eye.
True but sometimes due to the shape or layout of the room it can look disastrous which is a serious pain once they are installed. Dry lay some of your chosen tiles first to choose what looks best.

I should have added "if you have a very narrow bathroom" lol

Aaarrgghhh! Hit wrong key and it posted incomplete message! :o Hello again Arroli!

We had such a job finding anything we liked. Went round several of the big (builder's type) tile places and managed to find stuff we could live with for the bathroom. But when it came to the shower room we just couldn't find anything. It's very small too, more of a corridor than a room! ;) Eventually we went to a small local company just down the road from us, the chap there was incredibly helpful and friendly, and had an amazing assortment of tiles, lots of really drool worthy ones! Spoilt for choice!

In the end for both rooms we went with tiling to the ceiling with an inserted stripe of mosaic type tiles part way up all round the room to break up the blankness of it IYSWIM. We're very pleased with the shower room especially. Very big plain white tiles, and the insert is small glass tiles that look rather like old fashioned boiled sweets! :) I don't seem to have photos of the finished rooms yet, or at least not on this computer (may have on the laptop), but here's one taken when the job was part done.

The plain white tiles are a little stark, but the room only has a tiny window at the other end to the shower, so we really wanted to try and maximise the light. We've got a red roller blind up now too, so that adds some warmth to the room. Vinyl on the floor (I am prone to falling, so ceramic or travertine would be a bit hard) in a dark charcoal grey tile effect with sort of silver splatters on. The dark floor runs through from the utility room, which is incredibly sunny so we didn't want a pale floor or we'd be dazzled! ;)

The bathroom tiles are "OK", but I don't like them as much as the shower room. The colour isn't terrible good in this photo, but gives you an idea. Really must get around to taking some photos now the rooms are finished!

I prefer tiles all the way up the wall - at home we have them up to top of door level only and above painted (we have very high ceilings so it was an attempt to keep the cost down that I've regretted since). At the new house we've tiled up to the ceiling, and then painted the ceiling.

Anyway, although it may cost a bit more I would always now go to a specialist tile place. In the long run it's money saving. While I quite like the bathroom, I love the shower room. I realise it isn't to everyone's taste, but for us it's perfect.

Looks good, any reason to have the mixer tap attached to the bath and a separate shower mixer?

These days there are some really good trav effects in porcelain and this wont need sealing. They can usually be used on the floor too but be careful if you choose a high gloss finish as these get slippy.

We have some really nice trav effects being loaded this week and a new tile called applestone which is a bit lighter than trav. should be loaded by tuesday. in the mean time check out canyon caliza which is a very popular trav 'a like'.

Good point about the high gloss slippiness tpt! Another reason why we went for vinyl over trav or ceramic. We have 1 year old grandsons (twins) that we hope will come and stay with us when they're a bit older, so we wanted something child friendly too.

The tiles in our bathroom are applestone, as I said the colour in the photo isn't good (it was taken in December so not daylight). They are much paler than they look in that. I do like them, but we were in a state of desperation when we chose them as the tiler was coming in the following week! ;)

Desperation and confusion I suspect! :rotfl:

It was a complete nightmare getting the bathroom and shower stuff - the time when it was needed arrived too soon! ;) We spent weeks going back and forward to the bathroom place, think the owner was sick of the sight of us by the time we were finished! :o :rotfl: We were trying to get the kitchen purchases sorted out at the same time too... Thank goodness OH only works 3 days a week now, or we'd never have got things chosen! We weren't helped by me having a really bad dose of gastroenteritis around that time either which laid me low for ages even after the worst part was over.

I know we discussed it with Bathroom Man, and it seemed the best way to go, but can't remember the details now. Would ask OH but he just went over to the house to wash the kitchen floor and vac up some of the dust from when the carpets were laid.

ha ha I know the feeling I just went for the one mixer tap attached to the wall as "if" it ever fails then its easy to swap out.

Actually thinking back again, it may have been so that we had a thermostat for the shower - think the taps are just a straight mixer and don't have thermostat. Safety for the twins again! :) To be honest we were in such a rush to try and get things sorted it was all very confusing. Plus I'm quite cognitively challenged when overtired (I have M.E.) which I have been more or less continually since the house build stuff started. :( I can't believe we're nearly finished now! Just the glazed screen by the kitchen door to go in, and some odd bits of paint to be touched up, plus window sills in porch and front door to have top coat and we'll be done! :j

And then it'll be onto curtains!
