NatWest Emergency Cash

Nice story but try harder next time

Have a listen to today's Money Box programme. Some NatWest customers have lost several hundred pounds to emergency cash fraud, but the bank refused to refund the money. In one case, eleven emergency withdrawals were made over three days. Sounds like NatWest has a particularly lax definition of the word "emergency".

The latest scam seems to be that fraudsters can enable mobile banking on your account without your knowledge, then use the smartphone app to obtain emergency PIN codes for your account.

And how do they get the account details to do that ?
Id hazard at a guess a virus on the computer and access the pc that way ?

I tried removing and re-installing the app (as per the FAQ) to activate Getcash (was already jelly-bean).

I had to enter a mobile number (twice). The activation code was sent to the number entered. I used my primary (and bank registered) mobile number. Can any informed poster confirm (or deny) that the provided mobile number had to be a mobile number already registered with the bank?

I can only say that I have used my registered number on the app.

Money Box won someone their money back "as a goodwill gesture". The programme invited others who had experienced losses in this way to contact it via its web site.

    Bumping the post.

Nobody seems to know or they know but are not saying. There is after all an unstated but implied "feedback" loophole in the registration process.

One thing I can add today was that the re-registration was not immediate (as documented), however I noted the app began to work after a few hours. This morning I received a confirmation text timed some 12 hours after activation was first noticed. A less than implied "feedback" loophole.
  • I left Natwest a couple of years ago, I had a current account with them for about 14 years but I felt the service was going downhill, despite all the customer charter adverts. What matters to most people is customer service, and more than one occasion I visited a branch there were massive queues at the counters, and also at the information desk. There was one person at the info desk dealing with about 15 customers, people were very frustrated, I had to wait about 1 hour 30 just to close down an account I no longer used, which ended up taking 1 minute and signing a piece of paper.

Don't forget there is also the new Getcash service, which is identical to emergency cash, but for smartphone users who generate a code from their mobile which can be used only in RBS group ATMs

A recent security test by independent penetration test company , demonstrated several page 1 flaws in the getcash application. The banks never like to admit have a technical problem. I blame poor coding, and outsourcing without protecting the information in trasnit properly

All they need is to steal a bank statement from the post.
It contains all they need to get emergency cash from RBS & Nat west.

We had 4 cards before it stopped.
    They only got money once.

RBS admitted that they could not stop it.
If it did not stop they would have to change our account number.

Nice idea but very very poor security.

And in our case it was an inside job involving a company owned by RBS.
I keep watching the press to see if anybody gets convicted. We live in hope.
