I'm thinking of getting a natwest account, just so I can get some cash without carrying a cash card.
I tried the natwest site, but it was unhelpful.
Do they charge for this service? are there any restrictions? Is it only UK or England.
until now, I have placed my debit card in the sole of my shoe, when visiting less safe places, like the carnival or tottenham.

It is designed for when you lose your card not an everyday way of getting cash out. You have to report your card as lost or stolen to use the service, so unless you want to keep doing that (and I should think they would close your account if it became a regular occurrence then the service doesn't do what you want it to: http://www.natwest.com/personal/current-accounts/g4/cards/abroad.ashx

You can only withdraw from RBS or Natwest machines in the UK too.

I think the clue is in the name, EMERGENCY cash service. I believe everytime you use it there is a charge.

    Wrong.
The person on the phone only needs to know your name, address, DOB and account & sort number. No security questions (ie mothers maiden name, school, first pet etc) are asked.
I have had almost TEN replacement debit cards sent to me in the past two months due to this facility.
This fraud is rife at Natwest and they cannot control it (as confirmed by one of their advisors).
It is the inconvenience of having your card refused in a supermarket, petrol station etc that is the problem, not the money coming out of the account (as this will be refunded).

And how would people who are going to committ this supposed fraud gonna have these details

They also ask unique questions too such as do you have any direct debits on your account and who its payable too and the amount etc.

There is no charge for the service, although the new t&c include a £5 charge for replacement LOST (ie not stolen) cards. It remains to be seen when (and if) this charge will be applied as I have not seen anyone actually charged it yet - I expect it will be enforced for 'repeat' offenders.

I once had a customer who kept losing their card - they ended up stopping the facility altogether and stopped any card production.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p
  • Hi there, I have experienced the same problem but have been refused the refund. Unfortunately i was daft enough to respond to what i have been told is a fishing email, where they took only a few online banking details. I responded to this mid week last week, i saw a notification in my emails saying my online banking had been stopped, panic stricken as i was due to be paid friday for some promo work. Desperately needed as unemployed at the moment. So i started to respond the email was an exact replica to natwest online facilities however it started to ask for account details so i x off it thinking it was a bit strange. If only i had reported it then. On saturday i went to the petrol station an my card was refused, how mortifying - 8 people in a que behind me. I had to park my car up an walk to the tesco across the way. The cash point then swallowed my card, i have an old phone an did not have a contact telephone for natwest so i rang a number on the back of my credit card which told me they were closed. I then had to call my mum to lend some cash. I then was driving to the midlands to see my bf and i rang my mum hands free of course lol still highly embarrassed from the petrol situation i was discussong it with my mum saying why hadnt natwest rang or something. So i asked her to check my online banking an then i found out 270pound had been transferred to my joint account and 240 emergency cash by an atm had been withdrawn. I was immediately stressed an upset, i rang the bank an informed them of the situation. I was asked was it ok to disclose info to the police i agreed. I got a letter today saying they did not accept my fraud dispute. So iv now put in an appeal and told the police. I know i have been naive an maybe stupid but i have not taken this money. Please any advice is welcome. I will not stop until i get my money back. I will definately be closing my account with natwest as soon as the matter is sorted. I have been treated terrible people have been rude an unhelpful. Today i was directed to 5 different people an the last person was still not what i wanted. How can it be allowed that cash can been drawn for an atm with out proper identification. Thanks any advice is welcome x

I've used this facility and I was asked a lot of questions. Balance of account, recent transactions, last deposit, direct debits, other accounts held with natwest. I almost didn't pass the security checks myself!:)

Clearly the amount of info you gave in the phishing email must have been enough....

How much more can banks do when people don't listen to advice that THEY WILL NEVER ask for this sort of info.....

Don't forget there is also the new Getcash service, which is identical to emergency cash, but for smartphone users who generate a code from their mobile which can be used only in RBS group ATMs
