Thinking about renting a house with an oil tank...

Just looking for ballpark indications of cost etc. How often do they need filled up (think it's a 2000l tank) roughly? Where would I get the oil from? Are the costs on a par with gas?
Don't really know what I'm doing or what I should be taking into account with this kind of fuel. I'm hoping we're not saddling ourselves with really expensive fuel costs?

My sister has one, and we have found it comparable in terms of costs.
Neighbours can tell you who they use for deliveries locally.0 -
I can't give you specific costs. I believe it will depend on the size of your house/number of radiators etc. I expect someone will advise you on that though
I've heard of situations where a few neighbours will band together to get delivery on the same day from one company and negotiate a volume discount. Find out who the neighbours use, as hcb42 says...
The cost of oil has gone up in the past 10-15 years or so, but before that it was, imo, significantly cheaper and more convenient (for certain types of houses/areas, anyway) than other types of fuel. I've never had it myself, but wouldn't be put off by it at all.0 -
I've seen programmes on the Tv that have said 'cos of the rise in oil prices it's become more and more common for thieves to target places with tanks. So if you do go ahead get good locks on the pump.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

If you do go for it, make sure that you don't get stung by the LL for filling the tank at the start and also at the end of the tenancy.0

For a comparison of relative costs of fuel see this:

An oil tank needs to be kept secure behind locked gate to prevent theft of oil. Modern bunded plastic tanks can be drained by whacking a nail through the wall.0 -
That's no way to speak of the OH!Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0

I have oil, pretty well everyone for miles around has oil in this neck of the woods. More info here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/forumdisplay.php?f=780

Have you seen the energy performance certificate? this is exactly what it is for. the LL has to provide one by law. If the EPC was produced before this April the estimated costs are quite out of date but they do give heating requirement in kW so you can work it out.0

It depends where you live etc, i had heating oil when i lived in the far North of Scotland, there was only 2 companies that supplied, and no special offers, the boiler ate the oil!!! I had a 2 bed single story cottage, the heating was new ( had it fitted to replace electric heating), but i have spent thousands! It cost me a constant £130 per month for oil alone, and this was to try and keep on top of winter costs as many companies put the oil up in winter. One year i was paying £160 per month to keep up!!!
Please do you homework. As i said, i'm sure it depends where the house is, but check out from others in the area if you can, and like someone mentioned, get an energy report on the house.0 -
If you go for it, get the tank dipsticked and put on the inventory. And get agreement for differences on exit to be paid either way written into your contract. Dipstick it on exit.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
