I agree, but that's not what I stated was it?, nor what you said in your reply to my comment.

I simply stated that they may have called asking for information on how to contact the OP or to ask them to pass on a message and you stated that they had no right to do this.

But they don't even have the right to do that. Their powers of "investigating" are extremely limited. All they can do is leave a message, they are no allowed to ask anyone of their location or contact details. That is harassment.
So are to to assume that you can post a link to a ruling that states what Brighthouse have in their T&C's is illegal?

Why don't you have read the various pieces of legislation referred to earlier, Maye you'll find something there. The principle is, that no can demand a term of business, which forces the consumer to give up their statutory rights. Just because it is in the terms and conditions, does not make it legal or enforceable.
Passing on private or confidential information is not an illegal breach of the DPA if the person the data relates to has given permission for it to be disclosed.

It is if it is written into an unfair condition.
I recently took out travel insurance, and one of the terms gave permission for the insurance company to contact my doctor to check my medial history.
I gave permission for them to do this by agreeing to the contract. The OP may have done the same with their Brighthouse contract.

Which is a reasonable request, because it has a relevance to the cover. Having you r mother's aunt's father-in-laws phone number has no relevance to you borrowing money to by a sofa.

I agree, but we don't know if this is the case.
Just because the OP didn't hear from them doesn't mean that they didn't try to get in touch. They may have phoned many times when no one was home.

Then they should write to them. That is what reputable companies do.

How? if you haven't given contact details, how do they know who are the un-named family members and how to contact them?

Because apparently the finance company insist that their customers disclose this information, before purchase.

...they don't though. They asked my sister...she refused and still was able to purchase a crappy TV at a stupid interest rate.

If everything that Brighthouse do when they sign you up to one of their credit agreements was so unfair and against any laws in this country they wouldve been told to stop doing this. As it is they have been trading in this way for many years and under another name too.

So im guessing what they are doing is all above board then.

When they were trading under "Crazy George" they were hauled over the coals by the OFT. I suspect the reason they have continued to trade is because their customers are not brave or rich enough to take them on. Many money lenders acting outside of the law have been able to continue trading for years, until someone challenges them.

no matter how desperate i was i would never shop at these types of places, another group praying on the desperate "i want culture".
i remember i had a conversation with the guy who runs the shop here, i said how can you guarantee to get your money if you don't do credit checks etc..his answer? "we have plenty variations of collection"...pretty chilling to say the least..

still if you do't pay what you owe then they have a right to chase you for payment (legally though)

And those powers have very stringent limits and do not include harassing family members.

Phoning up guarantors to find out about why you haven't made a payment is not harassment.

    Yes it is.

These are not guarantors, they have not agreed to guarantee anything.

If we are specualting, why else would Brighthouse contact other people?
If we are speculating, what other reason would Brighthouse collect a list of names if it wasn't to contact them if it became necessary?

Of course Brighthouse can contact people on that list.
What is the list, freely given, for?
