I've been craving tuna like mad. I only like the john west Tuna chunks in brine though, can't stand tuna in sunflower oil. Everywhere seems to have an abundance of single tins of the sunflower oil stuff, but unfortunately, the co-op, Costcutter and Asda are only selling packs of 3 tins for a minimum of £3.50. There's a little shop about a 5 minute walk away that sells the tins individually for about £1.40. It's ridiculous.
And the price of bacon has shot up too.0 -

Tescos own brand corned beef used to be £1.43 for a tin. It staretd going up several months ago, to the point where I stopped buying it.
I was in Tescos this week and noticed that they had it on Special Offer - I can't remember the exact price but I did note that the price was for 2 tins and it brought the price per tin back to almost £1.43 each.0 -

Tuna and beef are two commodities that have risen almost uncontrollably in price over the last two to three years. I run a business that uses a lot of both and in the case of beef, wholesale prices are more than twice what they were three years ago. It used to be possible to get cheaper meat by sourcing from South America as opposed to the EU, but pricing from that region is now rising and rising. It also doesn't help that world commodity markets generally trade in US$, so a weakened Sterling forces prices up in the UK. The same goes for importing from the Eurozone.
Tuna market price has increased roughly 150% over the last year and seemingly, further increases are forecast. I believe poor availability from reduced catches is cited as the reason. Add onto that the same issues with currency and you have a product that's expensive now and going to get even more so!
I'm not an expert, but the above is as best I understand the current situation. Hopefully that may shed some light on the increased prices!0
