Sososilly: I am sorry you have had some a negative first thread, but welcome from me anyway! :)

I suggest you contact the RSPCA and voice your concerns over the welfare of the dog, it is unacceptable to hit a dog or put it's face into it's own waste.

That's just silly, I can tell you right now the RSPCA would not be interested in the slightest.

How is it any less stressful for a dog to be imprisoned in one room in a strange house than be taken to a kennel where they are should be accustomed to dealing with stress and soiling?

The company. Kenneled dogs are usually left for 16 hours a day.

I would not be able to deal with a new pet who soiled everywhere any more than I would feel comfortable adopting a pet that is completely blind.
    Honest.

I'd have just bitten the bullet and kept the mutt till he went home, but that's just me. If I was a very houseproud person I might feel differently, but then I probably wouldn't have had a dog. :rotfl:

    sososilly,

At the end of the day, some of us pet lovers are more sensitive than others, me included. And some people over think about what they should've, could've done differently, me included.

I think you've been put in a horrible situation, not of your making, and dealt with it in the best way you could. In hindsight, we can all think of how we'd do things differently; but I think you've dealt with this stressful incident perfectly fine and should not get too down on yourself.

After some of the comments on this thread, I can understand why you might not wish to come back. I hope not. I'm sure a lot of the people viewing/following the thread have thought the same as me: "What a crappy situation you've been dumped in! But at least you made sure the dog was safe and well cared for."

I'm glad the husband covered the kennel costs. As for the "friend", I'd dump her. She probably saw you as a "soft touch" and took advantage of your better, caring, responsible nature.

    You deserve better! :)

OP, you are coming over bitter because has her nails done and goes on holiday and went out for a meal on holiday. In your OP you said you OFFERED to look after the dog. Now, much of it is 'she can afford to pay for this, she can afford to pay for that so she should pay' if you really felt like that then you should have said no in the first place so she could have budgeted for it - and maybe you could have told her then not to her nails to be done!! Maybe she feels like she deserves to have something for herself every now and then, that is her choice and maybe they have budgeted for this. People do. However, you offered.....

I think you are being hard on the OP.

She has been tricked into looking after a un or semi house trained dog.

I wouldn't have it in my home either & I don't think she should pay half. Her friend is lucky shes not billing her for carpet cleaning.

All I can think is poor ****** dog :(
  • your friend is probably as embarrassed as you-at the end of the day you tried looking after the dog , it didnt work so kennels was the best option.
my moms shih tzu goes to a kennels when mom goes away and is so fussed she comes back with free haircuts and the kennel woman sad to let her back!
your friends dog was probably just suffering from being seperated, hopefully next time your friend will realise that pets need to be prioritised before going off on holiday- its a cost you should consider before getting a dog..not after!

Honestly OP - please dont judge Pets by the negative comments - most people viewed both sides of the situation, but a certain few ALWAYS comment negatively - apparently they are perfect pet owners, have a sterile home, their pets are perfectly behaved, due to them spending 40 hours a week training them, they have a large garden backing on to fields, they believe poor people shouldnt own pets and probably have a butler just for the dog(s). Ignore them! you will never satisfy them - they will always have reacted better than you!

I've been on the other side of this...

I had a 7 month old puppy when my father had a stroke. He was in hospital 200 miles away. I called my boss to say I wouldn't be in work for a few days and he immediately offered to have my dog. They had their own exceptionally well behaved dog, and also trained puppies as guide dogs. It seemed a good solution - I couldn't take him with me; as well as spending most of the time at the hospital, I would be staying with my sister who was a tenant on a farm where non working dogs were simply not allowed. I also had two young children to organise childcare for (single parent). I was away for a week.

When I picked my dog up the family were so polite. It had been no bother, it had been fun having a puppy in the house, etc etc. However, it later transpired their own dog took a dislike to mine, meaning they had to be kept separate and walked at different times. Mine cried most nights which led to their children taking turns to sleep on the sofa with my dog at night. To cap it all, boss's wife was an MSE er and stored up Bogoff offers in the garage. My dog managed to get in, wrecking years worth of toilet rolls, cornflakes, kitchen paper and so on. He also bit said wife...

8 years on, I'm still squirming! It just sounds like a nightmare. I'm mortified that I put someone through all that and no amount of flowers and chocolates can make up for it. However, I'll always be grateful for that kindness. (although the dog went to the kennels after that!)

OP, maybe your friend is just as embarrassed as I was. If the dog behaved at the kennels and not at your place, maybe it was a personality clash with your own dog that caused the misbehaviour. If so, neither of you could have foreseen the issues.

Hopefully you both put it all behind you, and maybe laugh at it in years to come (mine is still a bit of a hysterical, embarrassed laugh :rotfl:)

What have your views on the National Identity Register got to do with anything? If you had bothered to Google you'd have found you don't know as much about human rights and civil liberties as you imagine.
