Also it sounds like he is not working or anything close, if he just goes to hang out and gets some stuff to take home I can't see that it would effect his chances of getting a job.

I can't see how that is cheating anyone. What is he meant to do ? Stay at home all the time and never go out etc..this might be the only thing he has to look forward to and as unpaid he can do as little or as much as he can.

Or have I missed the point ?

OK - do you actually know 100% for sure that this person is on benefits?

OK - do you know 100% for sure that it's this person who reported you to the Council?

It sounds to me like you've been told in writing not to mend your car on the road, you ignored that, you've been told again (and threatened with 'possession of house' (do you mean they'll throw you out of your council house?) and you want to take it out on somebody else.

If you are continually fixing your car at the roadside, perhaps some neighbours have just had enough and decided to report you.

You said you were first reported last year and received a letter telling you not to fix your car at the roadside, but only yesterday you were still out fixing your car at the roadside and was caught in the act, so to speak.

I suppose it also depends what you are actually doing with your car, if for example you have the engine out and there is oil everywhere, you can see why people would get annoyed by this.

Also if you are working on friends cars, fixing things for favours etc. this can soon cause problems with your neighbours.
The reason why i was reported is because the women who lives next to me thinks that where i park my car is her space and only her family can park their when they come and visit her, so i went to see the council about it when she first told me about parking their and i was told the road belongs to the highway so anyone can park their car their. I only fix my car when it fails on the mot so it's not like i'm running a garage.

this is a funny old thread. errr so your idea is that you think someone may be getting some benefits they shouldn't get therefore you should be allowed to fix your car on the road. How are these connected on planet reality?

Anyway sickness benefit is nothing to do with the council and certainly nothing to do with whether people are allowed to fix their cars at the roadside.

It does seem a bit harsh if you are just doing a minor repair on your own car, but it sounds like maybe this is a regular occurrance and involves serious mechanics. No-one is going to complain about someone replacing a headlight bulb. But someone pulling out half the engine is another matter. Is there a car workshop rental space near you that you could hire? Do you know anyone with a drive you could borrow for a couple of days?

It just sounded from your post as though this has been a regular occurrence of you fixing your car since you were reported last year, and if that were the case I could understand why you have been reported and why neighbours would have reason to complain.

You were reported a year ago, ignored the warning and was caught doing the same thing by an official.

It also sounds like you have got problems with a few of your neighbours too.

If the road is a public highway, you can park where you like, but parking and repairing your car on the road are two different things.

Common sense would prevail, if you were just doing a quick 5 minute job or tinkering with your car, nobody would mind.

On the other hand, if this is prolonged, or a regular occurrence or you are attempting major mechanical work, then I can see it from your neighbours perspective also.

I'd like to get this clrear in my mind:

So your next door neighbour reported you for repairing your car on the public highway and said neighbour has to use a walking stick to get around and hangs round the local tip/recycling centre and takes things that other people throw away (with the recycling centre's permission) but you don't know if he's on any benefits at all but you've reported him (or at least tried to) to the council anyway - and are now complaining that the council (which is totally the wrong body to report benefit fraud to) haven't done anything and are "looking after benefit cheats".

    Have I got it right?
