Council looking after benefit cheats

I was sent a letter from the council back last year to say that i have been reported for fixing my car on the road, so i phoned them up about it and i was told i'm not allowed to fix my car outside on the public road and it needs to be taking to a garage, so i said to them why is it allowed for the person that reported me to claim sick benefits and go and help out when they like in the local recycling centre, so they replied you cannot go giving false accusations when you don't know it's true, so i replied it is true as my mate works their and all the people knows he goes they but the council don't, so they said they will look into it and we ended the call. So yesterday i was outside fixing my car and this women got out of a car and came over and said that she was from the council and that i have been reported again for fixing my car on the road, she then goes on if it happens again they will try for possession of house  so i said to her why is it that i get reported for trying to fix my car so i can get back and 4 work but when i spoke to someone from the council back last year and told them about the person that reported me is helping out at the local recycling centre nothing is done, so i told her that he is still there and what are you going to do about it, i then asked for her name so i could go to the local paper about the report and she didn't know what to say so she left ;). So i was wondering if i should report the matter to the local councilor as the council don't do anything.

It's the DWP who deal with sickness benefits rather than the council so you may find that your allegation wasn't passed on. I'd contact your local DWP fraud team if I were you to make sure they know what is going on. Alternatively it may be that they are building a case against the person in question (this takes longer than you think) and action will be taken in due course.

If you know that somebody is claiming benefit and doing paid work at the same time, you should report them to the appropriate authority (and as turkleton says, that's not the local council - and more than likely the reason that nothing's been done).

I personally don't think that reporting somebody on a tit-for-tat 'he reported me so I'm reporting him' basis is a good thing.

Is there anywhere else you can repair your car?

He don't get paid with money, he is allowed to take things home if he has seen something he wants that someone has taking to the recycling centre. Their ain't anywhere to fix my car unless i take it to the super market so i can stay dry.

its always been illegal to work on cars on the roadside, and if you rent a council garage your not allowed to use that for anything other than storing your car in as well

What exactly are these 'sick benefits' you're referring to?

    Incapacity Benefit?
Income support (because of disability or illness)?
    Disability Living Allowance?

Maybe this person you're thinking of reporting is allowed to do what you say he's doing.
Maybe he's advised DWP about what he does at the recycling centre and they've said he's still eligible for his benefits.

I love the fact the op ignored the council because he assumes that there is a benefit cheat in his street .

If you are continually fixing your car at the roadside, perhaps some neighbours have just had enough and decided to report you.

You said you were first reported last year and received a letter telling you not to fix your car at the roadside, but only yesterday you were still out fixing your car at the roadside and was caught in the act, so to speak.

I suppose it also depends what you are actually doing with your car, if for example you have the engine out and there is oil everywhere, you can see why people would get annoyed by this.

Also if you are working on friends cars, fixing things for favours etc. this can soon cause problems with your neighbours.

I don't know what benefits he is on but he has to go around with a walking stick because he cannot walk far.

How do you know who reported you ? Surely the council did not supply that information ?
